Position Summary

Pharmacy Technicians work under the supervision of clinical pharmacists to ensure the delivery of compassionate, efficient, and high-quality pharmacy services. This includes operational and clinical support for patient care, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with all laws and policies.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Duties

  • Prepare drug orders as per physician requests, adhering to established policies and protocols.
  • Accurately verify computerized patient medication records and maintain complete patient drug profiles.
  • Compound non-sterile pharmaceuticals and issue controlled substances while maintaining proper documentation.
  • Perform technical pharmacy duties (non-judgmental) under direct pharmacist supervision.
  • Support specialized pharmacy areas such as operating rooms, ambulatory care services, or outpatient pharmacy services (e.g., anticoagulation clinics, prescription order entry).
  • Maintain all competency, skills assessments, and licensure requirements, including attending staff meetings and training.

Clinical Duties

  • Assist in ensuring safe and cost-effective drug therapies for patients.
  • Interpret and extract data from patient medical records accurately.
  • Detect and report adverse drug reactions promptly.
  • Participate in medication use reviews, quality improvement activities, and data collection.
  • Coordinate pharmacist-led patient education per protocol.

Work Environment & Hazards

  • Exposure risks include hazardous/toxic substances, needles/sharp items, and biologic materials.
  • Potential for musculoskeletal injuries due to improper lifting techniques.

Qualifications

Education & Skills

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Pharmacy experience.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Required: Registered Pharmacy Technician license in the applicable state.
  • Preferred: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
