This full-time Oncology Pharmacist Specialist position supports the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) at the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, PA, contributing to high-impact oncology clinical trials and specialized pharmacy operations.


Role Overview

The Pharmacist Specialist – Oncology (IDS) is responsible for the safe, effective, and compliant delivery of investigational and standard pharmacotherapy within oncology services. This role supports centralized and decentralized medication-use systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, patient safety, and operational excellence within research and clinical practice.

The position combines clinical oncology pharmacy expertise, investigational drug management, sterile compounding, regulatory oversight, and interdisciplinary collaboration.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Investigational Drug Services

  • Interpret and evaluate physician orders to prepare and dispense appropriate medication dosage forms for inpatient and outpatient oncology patients

  • Manage investigational drug protocols in compliance with federal regulations, Pennsylvania Pharmacy Practice Act, and institutional policies

  • Prepare and dispense sterile intravenous admixtures using aseptic technique

  • Maintain investigational drug accountability, documentation, and regulatory compliance

  • Review patient medication profiles for allergies, drug interactions, duplications, and protocol adherence

  • Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions in a timely manner

Regulatory & Quality Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with hospital quality management policies and regulatory standards

  • Support formulary management and therapeutic interchange initiatives

  • Assist in assessment, mitigation, and prevention of medication-related adverse events

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on optimizing medication-use processes

Operational & Leadership Support

  • Organize daily pharmacy operations and supervise pharmacy technicians, interns, and ancillary staff

  • Serve as a liaison to physicians, nurses, research teams, and external stakeholders

  • Provide drug information and oncology-related education to healthcare professionals and pharmacy trainees

  • Utilize pharmacy informatics systems and technologies to enhance medication safety and workflow efficiency


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)

  • Current and active Pennsylvania Pharmacist license

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or minimum of 3 years of experience in a specialized pharmacy area such as oncology, investigational drug services, research, medication safety, regulatory, or quality

  • Strong knowledge of oncology pharmacotherapy and investigational drug management

  • Experience in sterile compounding and aseptic technique


Preferred Qualifications

  • Oncology-focused residency or experience in an IDS setting

  • Board Certification (e.g., BCOP or BCPS) preferred

  • Training or certification in research, regulatory compliance, medication safety, or pharmacy informatics


Licensure & Compliance Requirements

  • Active Pharmacist License (Pennsylvania)

  • Act 34 Clearance

  • Compliance with institutional and federal regulatory standards
