Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in providing support to the pharmacy department by ensuring the proper handling, dispensing, and delivery of pharmaceuticals to the patient care areas. This position requires proficiency in inventory management, medication preparation, and knowledge of hospital regulations regarding drug storage and accountability. You will work closely with pharmacists and other healthcare staff to ensure quality patient care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Medication Management: Prepare, package, and label medications for inspection and approval by pharmacists. Maintain inventory levels and store pharmaceuticals according to hospital and state regulations.
  • Prescription Processing: Process prescriptions, including entering HIPAA patient and insurance information, verifying drug details, and dispensing medications.
  • Inventory Control: Ensure pharmaceutical supplies are maintained and accurately tracked. Handle inventory discrepancies, verify received merchandise, and ensure proper storage.
  • Controlled Substances: Verify and maintain controlled substance inventories. Prepare controlled substance orders and ensure proper documentation and secure handling.
  • Medication Delivery: Deliver medications and supplies to various patient care areas and automated dispensing cabinets. Address stockouts and ensure smooth medication delivery.
  • Expiration Management: Monitor expiration dates, remove expired medications from patient care areas, and dispose of them properly.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with other pharmacy staff and healthcare professionals to support patient care and ensure compliance with safety, security, and infection control standards.
  • General Pharmacy Support: Assist in the care and maintenance of equipment, perform quality assurance tasks, and attend training sessions to enhance professional development.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Maryland Board of Pharmacy registration required.
    • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Training Program approved by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy is preferred.
    • National Pharmacy Technician Board Certification within 6 months of hire is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to perform mathematical operations required for inventory management and record-keeping.
    • Proficient in using pharmacy software applications.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with healthcare professionals and patients.
    • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and stand/walk for extended periods as needed.
  • Experience:
    • Prior pharmacy experience is preferred.

  • Compensation:
    • Pay Range: $18.50 - $23.00 per hour
    • Eligible for shift differentials and up to a $1,200 sign-on bonus.
