Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician will support the pharmacy department in a variety of tasks, including medication preparation, inventory management, prescription processing, and distribution. This role involves ensuring compliance with hospital policies and state regulations, assisting pharmacy staff, and contributing to the smooth operation of the pharmacy services.


Key Responsibilities

  • Medication Preparation: Package, select, and label medications for pharmacist approval. Fill drug supply requests and ensure the correct labeling and packaging of medications.
  • Prescription Processing: Process prescriptions by entering HIPAA patient and insurance data, verifying drug details, and filling prescriptions accurately. Ensure the use of current National Drug Codes (NDCs) and update as necessary.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain proper inventory levels of medications and supplies. Track and replenish stock in accordance with established levels. Handle discrepancies and report stock shortages.
  • Controlled Substances: Verify controlled substance inventories, process orders, and ensure proper documentation of controlled substances. Return expired or damaged controlled substances to designated staff.
  • Medication Delivery: Deliver medications to patient care areas and automated dispensing cabinets. Respond to stockouts, load medications, and resolve cabinet issues.
  • Expiration Checking: Monitor and manage expired medications across all areas. Dispose of expired items according to policy and document the process.
  • Retail Pharmacy Duties: In a retail setting, process prescriptions, manage customer interactions, and ensure correct billing and insurance information.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure adherence to hospital policies on medication storage, safety, and infection control. Handle hazardous substances properly and assist with equipment maintenance.
  • Professional Development: Participate in staff training, huddles, and educational programs to enhance skills and knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Maryland Board of Pharmacy registration required.
    • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Training Program approved by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy is preferred.
    • National Pharmacy Technician Board Certification within 6 months of hire is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations for inventory, supply requests, and record-keeping.
    • Proficient in following written and verbal instructions and using pharmacy software applications.
    • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Experience:
    • Prior experience in a pharmacy setting is preferred.

    • Pay Range: $20.42 per hour (Flat Rate)
