Position Summary
The Regulatory, Risk & Forensic team at Deloitte Consulting Services supports clients in navigating complex regulatory environments and risk frameworks. This role leverages advanced data, AI, and emerging technologies to ensure accurate, compliant coding and billing, helping clients achieve operational excellence and mitigate risk.
Role Overview
As an Outpatient E&M Medical Coding Consultant, you will conduct coding and billing compliance reviews focusing on Evaluation and Management (E/M) services and procedural coding (CPT/HCPCS). You will validate documentation, identify missed coding opportunities, and ensure complete and compliant charge capture prior to billing. This role involves close collaboration with onsite and offshore teams, mentoring junior coders, and providing detailed rationale for all coding decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Outpatient Coding Reviews
Perform coding quality reviews on hospital outpatient records to validate E/M levels (99211–99215) and procedural coding accuracy.
Identify missing or incorrect CPT/HCPCS codes and modifiers; update coding as necessary with detailed rationale.
Identify missed documentation clarification opportunities and provide compliant clinical parameters.
Evaluate coder-generated queries for accuracy and compliance.
Coordinate corrected coding with downstream billing teams.
Professional Coding Reviews
Review professional encounters to ensure accurate E/M level selection and complete CPT/HCPCS reporting.
Escalate recurring documentation or coding issues and support training initiatives.
Provide mentoring and feedback to junior team members on coding best practices.
Ensure all coding activities comply with regulatory standards, including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, AHA, AMA, and AHIMA guidelines.
Qualifications & Skills
3–5 years of experience in coding audits for outpatient, hospital outpatient, and professional US healthcare claims.
Certified coding professional (AHIMA: CCS, COC; AAPC: CPC, CIC, or equivalent).
Experience working with EMR systems, specifically Epic.
Strong knowledge of US healthcare billing rules (OPPS, MPFS) and reimbursement frameworks.
Hands-on experience with hospital coding tools/encoders such as Epic or 3M.
Excellent analytical, reasoning, and organizational skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, providers, and internal stakeholders.
Prior consulting experience preferred.
