Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director – Biotechnology & Oncology (CA Region)

Location: California | Field-Based | Full-Time

Position Summary

The MSL Director, Oncology, serves as a senior-level, field-based scientific expert responsible for engaging oncology healthcare professionals across the California region. This role focuses on scientific exchange, research support, and developing strong professional relationships with leading oncologists, academic centers, and key opinion leaders. The position plays a critical role in connecting external scientific insights with internal Medical Affairs strategy.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary Medical Affairs field representative for oncology in the assigned California territory.

  • Engage regional and national oncology thought leaders to facilitate accurate, compliant, and balanced scientific exchange.

  • Support investigator-initiated research (IIR) by managing submissions and coordinating internally.

  • Collect and communicate field insights, including competitive intelligence, therapeutic trends, and evolving treatment landscapes.

  • Support clinical development teams with site identification, trial feasibility, initiation visits, and patient accrual strategies.

  • Participate in and occasionally lead advisory board meetings.

  • Deliver scientific training to internal stakeholders and provide external education as needed.

  • Represent the organization at major oncology conferences, prepare session summaries, and share insights with Medical Affairs leadership.

  • Provide cross-functional scientific support within organizational guidelines.

  • Maintain deep scientific knowledge of oncology studies, compounds, mechanisms of action, and disease areas.

  • Uphold high standards of territory management while consistently contributing to team success and organizational goals.

  • Mentor Associate MSLs and serve as a positive role model within the team.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has no direct supervisory duties, though the MSL Director may informally mentor junior team members.


Education & Experience Requirements

Required Education (one of the following):

  • Master’s-level Oncology PA or NP with an active commitment toward completing a doctorate and at least 11 years of relevant experience, or

  • Accredited doctorate in a life-science field (Pharm.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., D.N.P., or D.O.) with a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or

  • Equivalent combination of advanced education and industry experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of Medical Science Liaison experience in therapeutic oncology strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated success building relationships with oncology KOLs and health systems.

  • Proven background in scientific communication and clinical research support.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is aligned with U.S. labor market variations.
Base Salary Range: USD 231,000 – 295,500 annually, adjusted for geographic region, experience, and internal equity.
