About the Role:
Optum is seeking a board-certified Medical Oncologist to serve as a Utilization Management (UM) Medical Director, contributing to the advancement of evidence-based oncology care. This fully remote position focuses on utilization review, provider collaboration, and clinical leadership to improve patient outcomes and healthcare value.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform oncology-focused utilization review determinations to ensure clinically appropriate care.

  • Provide clinical support to case management and disease management teams to optimize outcomes.

  • Apply NCCN guidelines and other evidence-based standards to evaluate care plans.

  • Engage in telephonic discussions with treating providers to promote quality improvements and cost-effective care.

  • Collaborate with internal nursing teams, providing education sessions and clinical mentorship.

  • Analyze clinical, quality, and utilization data to identify improvement opportunities.

  • Serve as a clinical subject matter expert for enterprise-wide oncology initiatives and policy development.

  • Partner with research, operational, and business teams to lead Optum's role in onco-innovation.

  • Participate in rotating on-call and holiday coverage responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO with an active, unrestricted U.S. medical license.

  • Board certification in Oncology (ABMS or AOBMS).

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical oncology practice experience.

  • Deep knowledge of NCCN guidelines and clinical pathway adherence.

  • Willingness to obtain multi-state licenses as needed.

  • Strong background in utilization, case management, disease management, or clinical quality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in managed care or health plan quality management.

  • Demonstrated success in peer review, product development, or policy implementation.

  • Leadership in oncology societies, value-based care initiatives, or payer-provider alignment.
