Organization Overview:

The Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) organization at Lilly is responsible for developing synthetic drug substances and drug products from pre-clinical phases through commercialization. The SMDD team includes scientists and engineers who are at the forefront of advancing small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, and other emerging therapeutic modalities. With access to world-class capabilities and extensive pharmaceutical development experience, SMDD is key in delivering technical solutions that enable a deeper understanding of products and processes across our portfolio. We are currently seeking a Materials Science Development Scientist to join our dynamic team.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform solid-form screening and characterization of novel small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, and intermediates.
  • Lead scale-up crystallization efforts for small molecules and peptide fragments.
  • Collaborate with development teams to solve complex technical problems related to solid-state science.
  • Leverage learning agility and problem-solving skills to apply solid-state principles and contribute to the delivery of new therapeutic modalities.
  • Develop workflows for integrating solid-state processes with automated data analysis.
  • Document scientific results and maintain laboratory area and instrumentation related to solid-state and process crystallization.
  • Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills to share results with multidisciplinary teams.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a physical science (e.g., chemistry), pharmaceutics, or a related discipline.

Additional Skills & Preferences:

  • Familiarity with standard solid-state analytical tools such as XRPD, DSC, TGA, DVS, HPLC, and crystallization instrumentation (e.g., Easymax, Crystal 16).
  • Knowledge of solid form screening, including salt and cocrystal screening for pharmaceutical solids.
  • Experience with scale-up crystallization of small molecules or peptides.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks, prioritize evolving project needs, and handle ambiguity.
  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical solid-state science and its impact on drug product performance and manufacturing.

Additional Information:

  • Travel: Occasional (0 to 10%)
  • Position Location: Indianapolis, IN; Lilly Technology Center-North
  • Potential exposure to chemicals, allergens, and loud noises.

Compensation:

The anticipated wage for this position ranges from $63,000 to $162,800, depending on the candidate’s education, experience, and geographic location. In addition, employees may be eligible for a company bonus based on performance.
