Job Purpose:
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based medical professional who serves as a scientific expert on specific disease states, Lilly and competitor compounds, and therapeutic issues. The MSL gathers and communicates valuable insights from scientific experts, supporting Lilly’s research and development efforts. The role involves facilitating scientific exchange between the company and the medical community, shaping the future of healthcare by providing critical clinical and scientific information to advance patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain and Communicate Deep Scientific Knowledge:

    • Continuously engage in learning to maintain expertise in the therapeutic area(s) represented.
    • Serve as a trusted, reliable resource of unbiased, accurate, and up-to-date medical and scientific knowledge.
    • Be sought after by customers for providing clear and precise scientific information on disease states and products.
  2. Customer Engagement and Support:

    • Engage in field-based, customer-facing interactions with scientific experts to address their medical/scientific questions.
    • Provide advanced information on disease states and products, ensuring customer needs are met with deep and tailored insights.
    • Connect external experts with appropriate internal Lilly resources and foster potential collaborations or research opportunities.
  3. Strategic Vision and Leadership:

    • Synthesize complex data and provide actionable clinical insights and strategic recommendations.
    • Effectively communicate customer feedback and insights to internal teams to support medical planning and decision-making.
    • Employ creative problem-solving skills to navigate challenges and utilize internal resources effectively.
  4. Territory Ownership:

    • Take ownership of assigned territory by developing and executing strategic plans for optimal efficiency and impact.
    • Prioritize core activities and ensure compliance with all internal and external requirements.
    • Continuously assess and adapt the territory plan to ensure positive results and effective engagement.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

  • Education:
    • Advanced degree in health sciences (PharmD, MD, PhD, or a medically related field) required. A Medical Degree (MD) or relevant therapy area experience is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience as an MSL or in a field-based role, specifically building relationships with scientific experts and key opinion leaders (KOLs), is highly desirable.
    • Experience in providing complex information to customers and contributing to medical strategy and decision-making.
    • Strong professional networking experience with successful outcomes.
    • Familiarity with health systems, academic communities, medical research, and medical education processes is highly valued.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to travel up to 80% of the time within the assigned geography, with some weekends anticipated.
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific content.
  • Self-directed with the ability to manage multiple priorities while working independently in the field.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Strategic and critical thinking skills to analyze and assess information and its relevance.
  • Fluent in English (both verbal and written). Additional language skills are a plus.
  • Strong teamwork, emotional intelligence, and relationship-building capabilities.
  • Resilient and capable of managing complex challenges in a dynamic environment.
