Job Summary
The Head, Clinical Programming and Technology is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the development, execution, and maintenance of scalable technology platforms in Clinical Data Operations (CDO). This leader will manage global teams in Clinical Technology and Clinical Programming, ensuring the efficient development and automation of technology interventions across clinical trials. They will drive the strategic vision for Clinical Technology, ensuring that technological advancements are integrated into clinical trials while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance with regulatory guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Technology Platform Development: Architect and oversee the development, execution, and maintenance of scalable technology platforms across CDO.

  2. Global Team Management: Manage global teams of Clinical Technology and Clinical Programming specialists, ensuring the successful development and support of clinical trial data applications, automation tools, and analytics platforms.

  3. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with stakeholder and partner functions to implement technology and automation strategies, monitoring KPIs, policies, and business rules for adoption.

  4. Return-On-Investment (ROI) Analysis: Establish and demonstrate the ROI for technology interventions in CDO, ensuring alignment with business objectives.

  5. Strategic Vision: Define and oversee the strategic vision for Clinical Technology in Global Clinical Data Operations, keeping abreast of industry trends and new capabilities.

  6. Technology Governance: Drive governance for all technology and automation projects within CDO, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals.

  7. Partnerships and Relationships: Build and maintain strong partnerships with key functions within Development, with a focus on technology teams.

  8. Leadership Development: Mentor leadership talent, support succession planning, and promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, and quality within CDO.

  9. Industry Leadership: Ensure CDO is recognized as an industry leader in clinical programming, shaping external environments such as data standards and regulatory guidelines.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  1. Achieve or exceed the Clinical Data Operations Strategic Vision, objectives, portfolio, budget, and resourcing targets.

  2. Demonstrate thought leadership internally and externally across Novartis.

  3. Efficient management of CDO resources and budget.

  4. Rapid evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, and capabilities.

  5. Improve employee satisfaction, engagement, and collaboration within CDO.

  6. Achieve measurable improvements in delivery metrics for Clinical Data Operations, with a focus on transforming clinical trials.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: BA/BS/MS or equivalent in health sciences, statistics, computer sciences, or related field.

  • Experience: At least 15+ years in global drug development within the pharmaceutical industry, with at least 8 years in team leadership roles.

  • Skills:

    • Expert knowledge in the end-to-end development of technology tools for Clinical Data.

    • Advanced understanding of regulatory requirements in Data Management and Statistical Programming (including GCP, ICH).

    • Proven leadership skills in large, complex global matrix organizations.

    • Strong stakeholder management and influencing abilities.

    • Excellent project and resource management skills.

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

    • Proven ability to lead major non-clinical initiatives.
