Position Summary

The Global Safety Officer (GSO), Global Safety Medical Director – Obesity plays a vital leadership role within the Global Patient Safety (GPS) organization.

You will serve as the safety expert for assigned development product(s), shaping the strategy, direction, and priorities for pharmacovigilance activities. This role is accountable for the overall safety profile, product-related decisions, and all related deliverables.

You will lead the Safety Analysis Team (SAT) and Global Safety Team (GST) and serve as a delegate for the Therapeutic Area Head (TAH) while managing Global Safety Physicians.


Key Responsibilities

Safety Strategy & Signal Management

  • Lead validation and assessment of safety signals.

  • Develop and maintain Core Safety Information (CSI) — including core data sheets and informed consent risks.

  • Review and maintain Risk Management Plans (RMPs) and ensure proper implementation of risk minimization strategies.

Regulatory Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and review safety sections for:

    • Periodic Aggregate Reports

    • New Drug Applications (NDAs) and other regulatory submissions

    • Protocols, Statistical Analysis Plans (SAPs), and Clinical Study Reports (CSRs)

Cross-functional Leadership

  • Serve as the Safety Expert on the Evidence Generation Team (EGT) and other relevant cross-functional teams.

  • Lead strategic discussions on safety decisions and represent safety interests during product development and lifecycle management.

Inspection Readiness & Compliance

  • Ensure inspection readiness within the Global Patient Safety remit.

  • Support internal and external audit activities related to safety oversight.

Travel Requirements

  • Domestic and international travel: approximately 10%.


Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school, AND

    • Completion of an accredited medical or surgical residency, OR

    • Clinical experience in an accredited academic or hospital-based private practice setting.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry experience in pharmacovigilance (PV) and product safety.

  • Previous experience in biopharmaceutical or regulatory agency safety functions.

  • Prior management and mentoring experience.

  • Board certification or equivalent training.

  • Expertise in Obesity/Cardiovascular therapeutic areas.

  • Proven leadership in managing product safety profiles and guiding cross-functional safety teams.
