Role Overview
The Lead Scientist – Veterinary / Facility Veterinarian plays a critical role in supporting the safety assessment vivarium program by overseeing veterinary medical care, animal health monitoring, and daily vivarium operations. The position is responsible for ensuring high standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency within laboratory animal facilities.

This role also supports ethical animal research practices by promoting the 3Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) and maintaining compliance with international animal care and research standards, including AAALAC guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Vivarium Operations and Animal Care

  • Provide veterinary medical care and health monitoring for laboratory animals within the facility.

  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare and husbandry practices in the vivarium.

  • Support biosecurity programs and ensure proper management of Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) animal colonies.

Animal Health Monitoring and Disease Management

  • Implement and manage health monitoring programs for laboratory animals.

  • Identify and manage disease outbreaks and health concerns within the vivarium.

  • Oversee sentinel programs and ensure continuous monitoring of animal health status.

Regulatory Compliance and Ethical Standards

  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations and regulatory guidelines including CPCSEA, GLP, and AAALAC standards.

  • Promote ethical use of animals in research and support implementation of the 3Rs principles.

  • Participate in internal and external regulatory audits related to animal research facilities.

Vivarium Administration and Operational Management

  • Supervise daily operational and administrative activities within the vivarium facility.

  • Ensure availability of required resources and infrastructure for smooth facility operations.

  • Monitor facility utilization and implement improvements for operational efficiency.

Animal Import and Quarantine Coordination

  • Coordinate animal importation procedures and quarantine protocols with internal teams and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure all import and quarantine activities follow regulatory and biosecurity requirements.

Team Supervision and Training

  • Supervise laboratory animal care technicians and support staff.

  • Provide training to team members on animal care procedures, regulatory compliance, and safety protocols.

  • Support professional development of staff working within the vivarium facility.

Research Support and Protocol Review

  • Participate in the design and review of research protocols involving laboratory animals.

  • Collaborate with discovery scientists and regulatory teams to support preclinical research studies.

Continuous Improvement and Scientific Contribution

  • Support ongoing improvement initiatives within the vivarium program.

  • Contribute to outreach initiatives, scientific publications, and continuing education programs.

  • Assist the Attending Veterinarian and facility veterinary team in operational and research activities.

Educational Qualifications

  • MVSc (Master of Veterinary Science) in Veterinary Medicine, Laboratory Animal Science, or a related discipline.

Experience Requirements

  • 1–4 years of experience in laboratory animal science, veterinary medicine, vivarium operations, or preclinical research facilities.

  • Experience working with laboratory animals in research environments is preferred.

Technical Skills

Laboratory Animal Science

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory animal care, health monitoring programs, and vivarium management.

Regulatory Knowledge

  • Understanding of animal welfare regulations including CPCSEA, GLP, and AAALAC guidelines.

Biosecurity and Facility Management

  • Experience with SPF colony management, sentinel programs, and quarantine procedures.

Operational and Team Management

  • Ability to supervise animal care staff and manage daily facility operations effectively.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with cross-functional research teams.
