Role Overview

The Facility Veterinarian / Lead Scientist – Veterinary will play a critical role in supporting the Safety Assessment vivarium program. The role involves overseeing vivarium operations, ensuring the health and welfare of laboratory animals, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and ethical standards in laboratory animal care.

The position also includes providing veterinary medical support, supervising animal care staff, and promoting responsible research practices aligned with the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement). The candidate will contribute to maintaining internationally recognized animal care standards, including AAALAC accreditation, while ensuring smooth day-to-day operational management of the vivarium facility.

Key Responsibilities

Veterinary Care and Animal Health Management

  • Conduct clinical examination and health monitoring of laboratory animals to maintain high standards of animal welfare.

  • Diagnose and manage health conditions affecting research animals and implement preventive care programs.

  • Oversee biosecurity measures and maintain Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) animal colonies.

  • Manage sentinel animal programs and disease surveillance protocols within the vivarium.

Vivarium Operations and Facility Management

  • Supervise daily vivarium operations and ensure efficient facility management.

  • Ensure appropriate resource allocation to support routine animal care and research activities.

  • Monitor capacity utilization and drive operational improvements to enhance efficiency.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in vivarium operations and animal care programs.

Regulatory Compliance and Ethical Standards

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks including CPCSEA and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines.

  • Maintain vivarium operations aligned with international standards such as AAALAC accreditation.

  • Promote ethical animal care practices by supporting the implementation of the 3Rs principles.

  • Coordinate animal import procedures, quarantine management, and regulatory documentation with relevant stakeholders.

Research Support and Collaboration

  • Participate in the design and review of preclinical research protocols involving laboratory animals.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional research teams within discovery and regulatory environments.

  • Provide veterinary oversight during preclinical studies and ensure adherence to approved protocols.

Team Leadership and Training

  • Supervise laboratory animal care technicians and vivarium staff.

  • Provide training and guidance on laboratory animal care, regulatory compliance, and biosafety practices.

  • Support professional development and knowledge sharing within the team.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and other facility veterinarians in day-to-day operations.

  • Participate in outreach initiatives, scientific publications, and continuing education programs.

  • Monitor safety metrics and ensure adherence to organizational safety and quality standards.

  • Ensure completion of mandatory training related to data integrity, health, safety, and compliance.

Educational Qualifications

  • MVSc (Master of Veterinary Science) from a recognized institution.

  • Specialization or additional training in Laboratory Animal Science is preferred.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory animal science and vivarium management.

  • Experience with animal health monitoring programs and outbreak management.

  • Familiarity with animal import procedures, quarantine protocols, and biosecurity systems.

  • In-depth understanding of regulatory frameworks such as CPCSEA, GLP, and AAALAC standards.

  • Strong organizational and operational management skills in research facility environments.

  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams.

  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
