About Lilly

Lilly is a global healthcare leader dedicated to discovering and delivering life-changing medicines. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, the company focuses on improving patient care, advancing scientific understanding, and contributing to communities worldwide. Lilly combines innovation, integrity, and compassion to create meaningful healthcare solutions.

Position Overview

Lilly is seeking a Computational Infrastructure Scientist to build and advance data systems that underpin large-scale biological and genetic research — foundational to modern biology and precision medicine.

This role bridges biology, computation, and informatics, providing scientific and engineering expertise to design scalable, reusable, and reproducible infrastructure for diverse biological and clinical-genomic datasets. The successful candidate will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-impact computational frameworks that transform research and drug discovery pipelines.

Key Responsibilities

Data Architecture & Infrastructure

  • Develop and extend data models and ontologies to harmonize heterogeneous biological, genetic, and clinical datasets.

  • Design scalable data ingestion, transformation, and standardization pipelines for genomic and functional datasets.

  • Build frameworks enabling semantic interoperability, metadata-rich data exchange, and reproducible workflows.

  • Contribute to the evolution of open data standards and knowledge representation in life sciences.

Computational Workflow Development

  • Strategize and implement scientific data processing workflows to convert complex biological data into actionable insights.

  • Design algorithms, ETL pipelines, and cloud-based workflows for efficient analysis of diverse datasets.

  • Support the integration of scientific workflows across discovery, development, and translational research pipelines.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Collaborate with computational biologists, bioinformaticians, geneticists, and domain experts to translate biological questions into computational frameworks.

  • Develop APIs, tools, and platforms enabling reproducible access to data.

  • Document design decisions to promote reuse, knowledge sharing, and long-term platform sustainability.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.

Preferred Skills & Expertise

  • Strong programming skills in Python; familiarity with R.

  • Proficiency with Linux environments and Git.

  • Knowledge of biological databases, ontologies, metadata systems, and PostgreSQL.

  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS S3, EC2) and workflow execution environments like NextFlow.

  • Exposure to Docker or other containerized environments.

  • Experience developing data-driven applications and visualization tools.

  • Familiarity with web APIs, design, and computational infrastructure architecture.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently on open-ended scientific problems.

What We Offer

  • Unique opportunity to shape the data infrastructure supporting next-generation biological research.

  • Exposure to cross-functional teams and state-of-the-art discovery pipelines.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud computing and modern data architecture.

  • A collaborative, rigorous, and impact-driven environment.

  • Leadership in maintaining and evolving a critical research platform for global use.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Estimated Salary: $151,500 – $244,200 (based on experience, qualifications, and location).

  • Eligibility for company bonus programs.

  • Comprehensive benefits including:

    • 401(k) and pension plans

    • Medical, dental, vision, and prescription coverage

    • Flexible spending accounts

    • Paid vacation and leave benefits

    • Life insurance and dependent coverage

    • Well-being programs, employee assistance, fitness support, and activity clubs
