Job Purpose

The Coder, IP DRG applies specialized coding expertise to perform invoice reviews and provide professional guidance to billing staff, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in claims processing.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct audits and coding reviews to ensure documentation accuracy and compliance (including co-source partners).

  • Assign and sequence CPT and ICD-10 codes for rendered services as required.

  • Collaborate with billing staff and system work queues (WQs) to ensure proper claim payments.

  • Ensure compliance with Medicare policy requirements, coding initiatives, and guidelines.

  • Work independently from assigned work queues.

  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold a professional attitude at all times.

  • Protect and disclose Protected Health Information (PHI) only per HIPAA standards.

  • Follow all Information Security and HIPAA policies and procedures.

  • Limit PHI viewing strictly to the minimum necessary to perform assigned duties.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the management team.


Qualifications

  • Certification: CPC (AAPC) or CCS (AHIMA).

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2 years of coding experience, specific to required specialty (IP DRG, OP, Denials, SDS, etc.).

    • Surgical coding experience preferred.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.

    • Ability to use job-related software effectively.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).

    • Ability to problem-solve, analyze accurately, and exercise sound judgment.

    • High integrity, dependability, urgency, and results-oriented mindset.

    • Professional, gracious, and welcoming demeanor for client/customer interactions.


Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally move around the work area.

  • Sit, perform manual tasks, operate office equipment (computer, peripherals, telephone).

  • Extend arms, kneel, talk, and hear as required.

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to follow directions, collaborate effectively, and handle stress.

Work Environment:

  • Noise level is generally minimal.
