Job Purpose

The Coder utilizes coding expertise to conduct invoice reviews and provide guidance to billing staff, ensuring accurate documentation, proper code assignment, and compliance with healthcare regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct audits and coding reviews to ensure documentation accuracy, including reviews of co-source partners.

  • Assign and sequence all CPT and ICD-10 codes for services rendered, as required.

  • Collaborate with billing staff and system work queues (WQs) to ensure proper payment of claims.

  • Comply with Medicare policy requirements, including coding initiatives and guidelines.

  • Work independently from assigned work queues.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

  • Uphold a professional attitude.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the management team.

  • Use, protect, and disclose patients’ Protected Health Information (PHI) only in accordance with HIPAA standards.

  • Understand and comply with Information Security and HIPAA policies and procedures at all times.

  • Limit viewing of PHI to the minimum necessary to perform assigned duties.


Qualifications

  • Certification: CPC (AAPC) or CCS (AHIMA) certification required.

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

  • Minimum two years of coding experience related to specialties such as IP DRG, OP, Denials, SDS, etc.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.

  • Ability to use job-related software effectively.

  • Surgical coding experience is a plus.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.

  • Strong problem-solving and creative skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgment.

  • High level of integrity, dependability, results-oriented, with a strong sense of urgency.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Gracious and welcoming personality for customer service interactions.


Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Occasional movement around the work area; sitting; performing manual tasks; using office equipment such as computers, peripherals, and telephones; extending arms; kneeling; talking; hearing.

  • Mental Demands: Ability to follow directions, collaborate with others, and handle stress.

  • Work Environment: Typically minimal noise levels.
