Job Purpose

The Coder utilizes coding expertise to perform invoice reviews, ensure accurate coding, and provide guidance to billing staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct audits and coding reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness, including work from co-source partners.

  • Assign and sequence CPT and ICD-10 codes for services rendered.

  • Collaborate with billing staff and system work queues (WQs) to ensure proper payment of claims.

  • Comply with Medicare policies, coding initiatives, and guidelines.

  • Work independently from assigned work queues.

  • Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct at all times.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the management team.

  • Handle protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA standards.

  • Follow Information Security and HIPAA policies, limiting PHI access to the minimum necessary.


Qualifications / Requirements

  • Certifications: CPC (AAPC) or CCS (AHIMA).

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

  • Minimum 2 years of coding experience relevant to the specialty (IP DRG, OP, Denials, SDS, etc.).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and other job-related software.

  • Surgical coding experience is a plus.

  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make accurate, timely decisions.

  • High integrity, dependability, and results-oriented mindset.

  • Customer service skills with a professional, welcoming demeanor.


Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally required to move around the work area, sit, perform manual tasks, operate office equipment (computer, peripherals, telephones), extend arms, kneel, talk, and hear.

Mental Demands:

  • Must follow directions, collaborate with team members, and handle stress.

Work Environment:

  • Typically minimal noise level in the work area.
