🎯 Role Purpose

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) – Rheumatology is a field-based medical expert who:

  • Engages with Scientific Experts (SEs) and Clinical Experts (CEs)

  • Facilitates scientific exchange between Lilly and the medical community

  • Provides strategic insights and feedback to inform Lilly’s research and commercialization direction

  • Supports clinical education, collaborative research, and customer engagement within the assigned territory


🧠 Primary Responsibilities

1. Scientific Knowledge

  • Maintain cutting-edge expertise in rheumatology

  • Respond to diverse medical information needs of SEs/CEs

  • Serve as a trusted source of unbiased, accurate, and current scientific information

2. Customer Engagement

  • Spend majority of time in face-to-face interactions with customers

  • Apply emotional intelligence, strategic thinking, and scientific knowledge to enhance customer experience

  • Connect SEs/CEs with internal Lilly resources and external collaboration opportunities

3. Territory Ownership

  • Develop and implement a strategic territory plan

  • Prioritize core MSL activities and ensure accountability for results

  • Coordinate with field-based colleagues to provide a compliant and seamless customer experience

  • Utilize territory analytics for effective customer identification and routing

4. Strategic Vision & Leadership

  • Synthesize and communicate actionable customer/clinical insights to internal teams

  • Escalate issues appropriately and exercise judgment in decision-making

  • Build internal networks and collaborate across functions

  • Demonstrate Team Lilly Behaviors: Include, Innovate, Accelerate, Deliver

  • Execute role compliantly, adhering to all internal/external regulations and laws


🎓 Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in health sciences (MD, PharmD, PhD) required

  • 2–3 years relevant clinical/therapeutic experience (Masters/Bachelor with ≥5 years experience considered)

  • Ability to travel up to 80% and work 4–6 weekends per year

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and acceptable driving record

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


🛠 Preferred Skills / Experience

  • Rheumatology therapeutic area experience strongly preferred

  • Proximity to a transport hub (airport/train station)

  • Strong intellectual curiosity and learning agility

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

  • Advanced presentation, computer, and literature identification skills

  • Strong strategic, critical thinking, and communication skills

  • Experience in field-based roles, professional networking, and customer engagement

  • Familiarity with health systems, academic communities, and medical education processes


💰 Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $145,500 – $213,400
