Position Overview
The Associate Director, Medical Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive medical publication and scientific communication plans. The role involves collaboration with the medical communication lead and medical director for the therapeutic area. You will manage publication agencies/vendors, budgets, and oversee medical communication deliverables to ensure the successful and timely execution of plans within budget. The role reports to the Head of Medical Communications for the Oncology Therapeutic Area.


Essential Functions

  • Lead publication planning teams for assigned therapeutic areas and develop comprehensive publication plans in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development of abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and manuscripts from Jazz-sponsored clinical trials and research.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders such as medical affairs, clinical development, and external authors and experts.
  • Manage vendor selection activities and day-to-day interactions with publication agencies.
  • Coordinate the development and review of materials to ensure compliance with Jazz SOPs and publication guidelines.
  • Develop content for Medical Science Liaison (MSL) and managed care MSL teams.
  • Lead scientific communication activities at key medical congresses, including booth materials and meeting summaries.
  • Provide scientific input into the development of commercial strategies and support medical communication tactics both internally and externally.
  • Analyze and summarize clinical trial data, ensuring compliance with GCP and industry guidelines.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced scientific degree (Doctorate degree preferred: PhD, PharmD, or MD).
  • Minimum of 5 years in pharmaceutical medical communications, medical writing, or a related field, preferably with publication leader experience.
  • Prior experience in hematology/oncology is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of publication practices, medical writing guidelines (GPP3, ICMJE, CONSORT).
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with budget management across multiple projects and external agencies.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PubMed.
  • Ability to travel 10-20%.

Required Education and Licenses

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD, MD) preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Occasional mobility within the office and external locations.
  • Regular computer use and sitting for extended periods.

Description of Work Environment

  • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, or temperature changes.
  • Occasional work outside regular hours (evenings and weekends) to meet business needs.
  • Public contact requiring appropriate business attire.

Compensation
For U.S.-based candidates, the full base pay range for this role is $156,000 - $234,000. Compensation depends on factors like qualifications, experience, and internal equity. The successful candidate may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, equity grants, and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision insurance, 401k retirement savings, and paid vacation.
