Role Overview:
The Associate Director - Publication Lead within the Global Scientific Communications (GSC) team will be responsible for developing and executing regional publication strategies within the International Business Unit (IBU). This role involves strategic planning, managing publication deliverables, and ensuring the dissemination of high-quality scientific information to address the specific needs of the IBU region. The Publication Lead will work closely with global and regional teams, medical affairs, patient outcomes, and commercial colleagues to ensure alignment with global publication strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Publication Strategy Development & Planning:

    • Lead the development of IBU-specific publication strategies for assigned assets or portfolios, ensuring alignment with the global publication plan.
    • Monitor the publication environment in the IBU region, including competitor activities and trends in congresses and journals.
    • Identify gaps and opportunities for data disclosure, providing recommendations to internal stakeholders.
    • Ensure the balance between business needs, scientific integrity, and compliance with publication guidelines.
  2. Publication Management & Execution:

    • Develop and implement IBU publication tactics based on the regional strategy.
    • Manage the execution of publication plans, including the disclosure of scientific data through peer-reviewed journals and scientific congresses.
    • Track and update publication tools and databases (e.g., Datavision).
    • Coordinate content development and lead publication strategy meetings, ensuring timely execution.
    • Oversee outsourced deliverables and vendor relationships, including timeline management and issue resolution.
  3. Subject Matter Expert & Knowledge Sharing:

    • Provide expert advice on publication strategy, planning, and execution.
    • Serve as the regional expert on publication guidelines and industry best practices, including ICMJE and Good Publication Practices.
    • Share knowledge across functions and mentor colleagues on publication processes and strategies.
  4. Partnership & Stakeholder Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IBU Medical Affairs, Market Access, and other departments, to ensure alignment and integration of publication strategies.
    • Foster strong relationships with external authors and medical experts to ensure timely and effective publication.
    • Advocate for appropriate authorship criteria on scientific work products.
  5. Metrics & Reporting:

    • Use metrics to assess the value and impact of IBU publications and demonstrate their contribution to customer needs and business goals.
  6. Coaching & Process Improvement:

    • Provide coaching and training to internal stakeholders on publication best practices.
    • Contribute to continuous process improvement by identifying opportunities for efficiency and innovation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in a scientific, health-related, or communication field.
  • Significant experience in the Medical Affairs space, with proven expertise in managing publication deliverables.
  • Strong project management skills and experience in leading large/global strategic projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in data analysis, interpretation, and leveraging publication tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work across different cultures, teams, and time zones.
  • Ability to influence without authority and manage multiple customer groups with competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree with formal research experience in life sciences.
  • Experience in therapeutic areas such as neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular, or endocrinology.
  • Certification in Medical Publication Management (CMPP) or similar credential.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

Other Information:

  • Limited travel (approximately 10%) may be required.
  • A writing exercise may be part of the candidate evaluation process, and additional writing samples may be requested.
