Organization Overview:

The Bioproduct Research and Development (BR&D) organization at Lilly is dedicated to delivering new medicines through the development and commercialization of a range of products, including insulins, peptides, monoclonal antibodies, and gene therapy systems. The team consists of multidisciplinary scientists with deep technical expertise who work collaboratively with discovery and manufacturing colleagues. Located in Indianapolis, IN, the team has access to Lilly's extensive pharmaceutical development and engineering capabilities.

In this role, you will join a diverse team of analytical chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, and engineers to deliver product and process understanding to drive the portfolio forward. The ideal candidate will have experience across multiple analytical techniques, strong technical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Analytical Methodology Design & Implementation:
    Enable the development and implementation of analytical methodologies for the characterization and analysis of various molecules, including oligonucleotides, peptides, therapeutic recombinant proteins, synthetic/pegylated peptides/proteins, and monoclonal antibodies.

  • Control Strategies & Data Generation:
    Contribute to the establishment of robust control strategies by generating data, developing analytical methods, and designing stability strategies.

  • Collaboration & Portfolio Progression:
    Work collaboratively with scientists across development and manufacturing, as well as external development partners, to drive portfolio projects through various stages of development.

  • Advancement of Analytical Technologies:
    Evaluate and implement new analytical technologies/methods to enhance Lilly’s current analytical capabilities.

  • Process Improvement Initiatives:
    Lead new initiatives aimed at improving existing scientific processes both within the organization and across the company.

  • Scientific Concept Exploration:
    Identify and exploit new scientific concepts and apply strong problem-solving skills to contribute to multiple projects.

  • Communication & Reporting:
    Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate the technical and business-related implications of your work.

  • Leadership & Supervision:
    Potentially supervise BS/MS analytical scientists supporting BR&D analytical development.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:
    PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field; OR MS with 5+ years of relevant experience; OR BS with 10+ years of relevant experience.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Chromatographic & Analytical Experience:
    Experience with chromatographic separations (e.g., reversed-phase, ion exchange, size exclusion chromatography), capillary electrophoresis, spectroscopic methods, and other methods for analyzing oligonucleotides, peptides, and monoclonal antibodies.

  • Mass Spectrometry Expertise:
    Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry in the characterization and quantitation of synthetic molecules, including oligonucleotides and peptides.

  • Data Interpretation & Chemometrics:
    Experience with data interpretation, chemometrics, multivariate modeling, and other data manipulation tools.

  • Technical Problem-Solving & Learning Agility:
    Strong learning agility and ability to apply technical knowledge to improve the understanding of chemical systems or enhance analytical techniques.

  • Collaboration & Teamwork:
    Ability to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment while balancing multiple activities and handling ambiguity.

  • Communication Skills:
    Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate complex technical information.

    0-15% travel required.
