Role Summary

The Acute Coding Supervisor manages coding staff, performs coding, abstracting, and reporting, ensures compliance with laws and regulatory requirements, and provides continuing education. This role supports Revenue Integrity and hospital departments while fostering a positive, high-performing work environment. Remote work is supported.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage coding staff activities and perform coding, abstracting, and reporting in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Ensure continuing education and adherence to government and internal coding standards.

  • Audit, train, and supervise coding staff to maximize reimbursement, ensure quality coding, and maintain turnaround times.

  • Develop and motivate a competent, well-trained staff and participate in recruitment/retention efforts.

  • Complete probationary and annual employee performance evaluations.

  • Respond to requests from hospital departments, physicians, patients, and families to ensure excellent customer service.

  • Communicate effectively across organizational levels, including with physicians and CFOs.

  • Ensure knowledge of information privacy laws, medical record access, and release of information.

  • Assist HIM Director and Coding Manager in improving DNFC and Coding Revenue Cycle performance, including staffing, reports, and coding support.

  • Lead by example and foster teamwork, transparency, and a results-focused working environment.

  • Develop project work plans, facilitate resource allocation, execute project tasks, and coordinate with intra- and inter-departmental resources.

  • Conduct special projects as assigned by Optum360 leadership.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

  • Active AAPC or AHIMA Certification (CPC, CCS, or RHIT).

  • 3+ years of inpatient and outpatient acute facility coding experience.

  • 1+ year of leadership/management experience.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office products.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • RHIT preferred.

  • 1+ year of experience managing union employees.

  • Experience with electronic health records, health information systems, and healthcare applications (CAC).

  • Telecommuting adherence as per UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $58,800–$105,000 annually (full-time basis).
