Position Overview

Title: Undergrad Intern – R&D Strategy & Performance Excellence (SPx)
Department: R&D Strategy & Operations (RDSO)
Duration: Approximately 12 weeks
Type: Project-based and experiential internship

As a member of Amgen’s R&D Strategy & Performance Excellence (SPx) team, you will help develop and execute Amgen’s R&D strategy and roadmap. This includes driving functional transformation, continuous improvement, and performance management initiatives to enhance global R&D productivity and operational excellence.


Key Focus Areas

You will collaborate across multiple Amgen divisions such as Research & Development, Chief Medical Office, and other strategic groups. Your work will involve analytical thinking, communication, leadership, and teamwork in one or more of the following domains:

1. Strategic Transformation

  • Drive cross-functional transformation projects (from planning to value realization).

  • Contribute to digital transformation, cultural shifts, and process optimization.

  • Support executive sponsorship, structured decision-making, and change management.

2. Capability Building

  • Help design and implement programs to strengthen workforce skills and competencies.

  • Support training, leadership development, and talent management strategies.

  • Enable faster, better, and more efficient transformation processes.

3. Business Performance Excellence

  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts across R&D operations.

  • Apply methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, or Total Quality Management to drive performance.

  • Enhance operational efficiency, quality, and stakeholder satisfaction.

4. Technology & Data Analytics

  • Collaborate with the Data and Decision Sciences team.

  • Use analytics and evidence-based insights to support innovation, prioritization, and scalable growth across R&D projects.


What We Expect From You

Basic Qualifications

  • 18 years or older.

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree program (accredited university).

  • Minimum GPA: 3.0 or equivalent.

  • Completed at least one year of study before internship start.

  • Must return to school following internship completion.

  • Must not be employed during the internship period.

  • Must reside in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. (no sponsorship provided).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Business, Finance, Management Sciences, Life Sciences, or Engineering.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organization and multitasking abilities.

  • Enthusiastic, proactive, and willing to learn.

  • Adaptable and comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving priorities.

  • Basic understanding of project management, business processes, or change management preferred.
