Position Overview

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a highly experienced Supervisor – Medical Coding to lead and manage coding operations at our Chennai location. The role focuses on team leadership, operational oversight, and client management within the medical coding function, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across coding workflows.

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of coding experience, including 3+ years in team lead or supervisory roles, along with certification in medical coding (AAPC or AHIMA). This position requires strong expertise in coding standards, healthcare reimbursement methodologies, and personnel management.


Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Performance Management: Supervise coding teams to meet KPIs including productivity, quality, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition. Provide 1:1 coaching, performance feedback, and mentoring to ensure team success.

  • Client & Stakeholder Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, managing communication, escalations, and expectations. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and functional teams to ensure smooth operations.

  • Operational Oversight: Evaluate workflow, operational practices, and performance metrics. Implement quality initiatives and process improvements to optimize coding accuracy and efficiency.

  • Training & Development: Work closely with SMEs, auditors, and trainers to identify training needs and provide guidance to improve coding performance and compliance.

  • Strategic Planning & Process Improvement: Assist senior management in planning, implementing, and evaluating operational systems and procedures. Develop strategies to enhance retention, team engagement, and operational efficiency.

  • Compliance & Audit Support: Ensure adherence to coding, billing, and regulatory requirements. Actively participate in internal audits and maintain documentation to support compliance.

  • Problem-Solving & Escalation Management: Address complex operational challenges, resolve conflicts, and proactively anticipate critical situations affecting team performance or client satisfaction.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences, Allied Medicine (BHMS, BAMS, BPT, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing), or related fields.

  • Certification: Certified Medical Coder – AAPC or AHIMA (CCS, CPC, CPC-H, CCS-P).

  • Experience: 10+ years of medical coding experience, including at least 3+ years in a team lead or supervisory role.

  • Knowledge & Skills:

    • Proficient in medical terminology, human anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, and healthcare reimbursement methodologies.

    • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

    • Expertise in identifying training needs and coaching team members to improve performance.

    • Ability to monitor operations, manage absences, and ensure day-to-day workflow efficiency.

    • Experience in managing team performance, productivity, and client satisfaction.
