Job Overview

Optum is hiring a highly skilled Subject Matter Expert – Surgery Coding to support coding excellence across multispecialty surgical services. This role is designed for experienced medical coding professionals who possess deep knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, NCCI edits, and evolving CMS/AMA/AHA guidelines. As part of a global healthcare technology leader, you will contribute to advancing coding accuracy, supporting audit readiness, and strengthening the quality of clinical documentation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver accuracy-focused training and knowledge updates on Surgery Coding, including CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and NCCI edits.

  • Stay current with CMS, AMA, and AHA guideline changes and ensure timely communication to coding teams.

  • Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of assessments, audits, and coder performance.

  • Monitor coding accuracy through periodic audits and quality reviews, providing constructive feedback and performance insights.

  • Participate in calibration meetings and contribute to discussions on coding discrepancies and process improvements.

  • Support coders with complex case resolution, documentation improvement, and guideline clarifications.

  • Collaborate with Compliance, Quality Assurance, and Operations to identify coding gaps and enhance accuracy.

  • Ensure adherence to all organizational policies, compliance standards, and operational directives.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Life Sciences, or a related field (preferred).

  • Mandatory AAPC or AHIMA certification such as CPC, CIC, CCS, or COC.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in medical coding, with strong specialization in Surgery Coding.

  • Strong understanding of Surgery & E/M guidelines, CMS documentation requirements, and US RCM processes.

  • Hands-on experience with EHR/EMR platforms (EPIC, 3M, eCAC, Cerner, or similar).

  • Proven attention to detail, high accuracy, and strong audit interpretation skills.

  • Proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and clinical documentation standards.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation and coaching capabilities.

  • Expertise in CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and NCCI guidelines.

  • Strong analytical and documentation review skills.

  • Effective communication and training delivery abilities.
