Role Overview:
Gilead is seeking a Senior Manager, Data Scientist to drive advanced data science initiatives supporting clinical development and business operations. This role combines leadership, technical expertise, and innovation in statistical analysis, machine learning, data engineering, and predictive modeling to enhance clinical trial processes and organizational decision-making. The successful candidate will collaborate across multiple functions, define data science architecture, and develop robust analytics solutions aligned with strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and implement advanced data science solutions for clinical trials, business operations, and predictive analytics.

  • Develop and standardize team- and department-level tools, templates, and best practices.

  • Provide matrix leadership to cross-functional teams in data science workflows, model development, and application maintenance.

  • Design and implement data science architecture, integrating statistical analysis, machine learning, automation, and visualization techniques.

  • Coordinate infrastructure requirements with IT and business stakeholders to support scalable solutions.

  • Build, test, deploy, and maintain machine learning models and data-driven applications.

  • Perform statistical analysis to evaluate model performance and refine predictive approaches.

  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to implement effective software and analytics solutions.

  • Ensure compliance with established policies, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.

  • Create and manage resource plans, identify cross-project efficiencies, and maintain alignment with strategic priorities.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline with 2+ years’ data science experience (PhD with 6+ years preferred) OR

  • MS in Computer Science or related discipline with 8+ years’ experience in data science or quantitative analytics OR

  • BS in Computer Science or related discipline with 10+ years’ relevant experience.

  • Strong problem-solving, algorithm design, and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional data science projects.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, R, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic focus or professional experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML).

  • Experience with end-to-end data science workflows, including data engineering, statistical modeling, visualization, and data warehousing.

  • Experience building machine learning models and libraries, including cloud-based solutions (AWS).

  • Familiarity with high-performance columnar storage formats and modern data platforms.

  • Experience contributing to open-source projects and mentoring other data scientists.

  • Track record of scientific publications or presentations in data science or related fields.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Advanced knowledge in statistical analysis, data automation, data mining, and visualization.

  • Familiarity with modern ML architectures, cloud ML services, and software development methodologies.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, adapt to changing priorities, and deliver high-quality results.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to travel as required.
