🔹 Summary

Novartis Biomedical Research is seeking a creative and collaborative Senior Scientist (SS1 or SS2 level depending on experience) to join the Synaptic & Cellular Neurobiology Unit within the Neuroscience research department. The role involves designing, executing, and delivering preclinical research data using in vitro cellular models and in vivo animal models, supporting innovative drug discovery for neurological disorders.


🔹 About the Role

This position can be filled at:

  • Senior Scientist I (SS1)
    OR

  • Senior Scientist II (SS2) — based on expertise and experience.

The scientist will work in a matrixed, collaborative setting with teams across Neuroscience and Biomedical Research.


🔹 Key Responsibilities

Experimental Design & Execution

  • Plan, design, conduct, and analyze experiments to address key scientific questions.

  • Use in vitro and in vivo models to generate decision-making datasets for drug discovery programs.

In Vitro Research

  • Implement and optimize techniques such as:

    • Mouse & human neuronal cell culture

    • Immunocytochemistry

    • Fluorescence imaging & image analysis

    • Biochemical assays (Western blot, ELISA, MSD, JESS)

    • Gene expression tools (RT-qPCR)

In Vivo Research

  • Perform and analyze rodent model experiments including:

    • Dosing

    • Tissue collection

    • Ex vivo analysis

  • Conduct CNS delivery procedures:

    • Intracranial injections

    • Intracerebroventricular injections

  • Execute peripheral delivery routes:

    • IV, Retro-orbital, IP

  • Perform advanced necropsy and dissections (brain/spinal cord extraction, CSF collection).

Data Management & Reporting

  • Keep electronic lab notebooks updated.

  • Summarize, interpret, and present research findings to project teams.

SS2 Level Additional Expectations

  • Propose novel experiments.

  • Contribute to shaping preclinical strategies.

  • Act as an emerging scientific leader.


🔹 Essential Requirements

Education

  • B.S. degree in neuroscience, cell biology, or related discipline.

Experience

  • Senior Scientist I (SS1): ≥ 4 years relevant lab-based neuroscience experience.

  • Senior Scientist II (SS2): ≥ 7 years relevant experience.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong experience with:

    • Rodent primary neuronal culture

    • Cell-based assays

    • Immunocytochemistry

    • Fluorescence microscopy

    • Image analysis & statistical analysis

    • Gene (RT-qPCR) and protein expression assays

  • Proficiency with in vivo rodent work including:

    • Stereotaxic brain surgery

    • CNS/peripheral dosing

    • Tissue & CSF collection

Soft Skills

  • Proactive, self-motivated, organized, and able to multitask.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaborative matrix teams.


🔹 Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. degree in relevant field.

  • Industrial research experience (≥50% of total experience preferred).

  • Experience with embryonic rodent brain dissection and neuronal dissociation.


🔹 Compensation

Salary Ranges

  • Senior Scientist I: $85,000 – $158,000 per year

  • Senior Scientist II: $93,000 – $174,000 per year

Final salary depends on:

  • Skills

  • Experience

  • Market factors

  • Internal evaluation
