Role Overview: Senior Medical Advisor (Rare Diseases)

A senior, office-based medical leader responsible for driving scientific strategy and execution within the Rare Diseases Therapy Area. This role ensures alignment of Medical Affairs Plans with business goals, leads evidence generation, supports clinical practice transformation, and contributes to improved patient outcomes. The Senior Medical Advisor acts as a medical expert, cross-functional leader, and key driver of innovation within the healthcare ecosystem.


Key Responsibilities

1. Scientific Expertise

  • Maintain deep clinical/scientific expertise in Rare Diseases, AstraZeneca products, and competitive landscape.

  • Lead and contribute to the Therapy Area’s Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP).

  • Serve as subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Support training, mentorship, and capability building within the therapy area.


2. Medical Strategy & Clinical Input

  • Ensure FMSP and MSL activities align with broader Medical Affairs Strategic Plans.

  • Develop integrated engagement plans involving traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.

  • Provide strategic input to Medical and Product plans.

  • Prioritize activities across the team to align with portfolio needs.

  • Identify and shape scalable, sustainable clinical practice transformation initiatives.

  • Leverage digital technologies and dashboards for data-driven decisions.

  • Bring field insights to internal strategic discussions.

  • Track delivery vs plan, report variances, and recommend mitigation strategies.

  • Lead medically driven initiatives aimed at achieving measurable positive patient outcomes.

  • Develop and implement educational initiatives and clinical support tools.

  • Promote win-win partnerships that enhance sustainable patient health outcomes.


3. Medical Governance & Compliance

  • Provide scientific review and approval for complex product materials, reports, and conference documents.

  • Ensure scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance in marketing materials.

  • Adhere to AstraZeneca branding standards and external regulations.

  • Collaborate closely with Compliance to maintain operational excellence.


Required Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Medical degree with specialization or relevant experience in Rare Diseases or related area.

  • Extensive experience in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical environment and field medical functions.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.

  • Strong organizational, project management, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

Desirable

  • MBBS or MD preferred.

  • Innovative, solution-driven approach.

  • Experience in research, drug discovery, development, or lifecycle management.

  • Broad understanding of Medical Affairs functions.
