About the Role
Fortrea, one of the world’s leading Clinical Research Organizations (CROs), operates Early Phase Clinical Research Units across the US and UK. We are seeking a Clinical Research Nurse I to join our Madison, WI team. This entry-level nursing role involves direct interaction with healthy volunteer participants while learning to interpret clinical research protocols in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

You will gain hands-on experience in diverse therapeutic areas and study types, including ascending dose studies, first-in-human trials, food effect studies, and drug-drug interaction trials. This role provides exposure to early-phase clinical development, helping establish the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of investigational drugs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care using nursing assessment, clinical judgment, and protocol adherence.

  • Ensure participant safety, dignity, and well-being at all times.

  • Maintain current emergency certifications and follow company emergency protocols.

  • Respond appropriately to clinical emergencies.

  • Observe participants for adverse events, document findings, and take corrective actions as required.

  • Obtain informed consent and educate participants on study procedures.

  • Administer investigational compounds, including parenteral administration, according to study protocols and regulations.

  • Perform study-related procedures: cannulation, telemetry, Holters, vital signs, ECGs, venipuncture.

  • Support daily clinical operations and maintain a safe, compliant study environment.

  • Undertake additional duties as assigned to support research objectives.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with current state licensure.

  • CPR/AED certification required; ACLS certification preferred (can be obtained on the job if needed).

  • Experience Level: Entry-level to 1 year of nursing experience; additional clinical experience may substitute for education requirements.

  • Comfort in a fast-paced, protocol-driven environment with shifting priorities.

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and technology skills; experience with electronic data capture preferred.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to stand or remain stationary for 6–8 hours daily.

  • Repetitive hand movements to operate laboratory and clinical equipment.

  • Occasional crouching, stooping, bending, and twisting.

  • Ability to lift/move up to 15–20 lbs.

  • Flexible work schedule and consistent attendance required.
