Position Summary

The Research Associate II – Characterization (Nitrosamines) will join Baxter’s Pharmaceuticals R&D division, specializing in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS, GC-MS).
This scientist will lead analytical studies supporting Nitrosamine risk assessments, Extractables & Leachables (E&L) testing, and LC/MS method development for pharmaceutical products.

The role involves independent laboratory work, method development, data interpretation, and problem-solving to support both new and existing drug products.


Key Responsibilities

Analytical & Experimental Work

  • Perform chemical extractions of container-closure systems and drug product solutions.

  • Develop and validate mass spectrometry-based analytical methods for trace analysis.

  • Apply LC-MS and GC-MS techniques to identify nitrosamines and leachables.

  • Conduct independent experiments and interpret analytical data to resolve complex problems.

Project & Data Management

  • Independently plan, execute, and manage projects across multiple disciplines.

  • Assess and approve the technical feasibility of complex design concepts.

  • Analyze and evaluate experimental results; identify trends, exceptions, and product deviations.

  • Prepare detailed technical reports and share outcomes with internal teams.

Compliance & Quality

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Quality System Regulations (QSR), cGxP, and other applicable guidelines.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance in all R&D, testing, and data reporting activities.

  • Contribute to the generation, review, and interpretation of new regulatory guidance impacting analytical R&D.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Science, or related field with 8–12 years of experience
    OR

  • Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with 6–7 years of experience.

Technical Expertise

  • Formal training and hands-on expertise in mass spectrometry (MS, LC-MS, GC-MS).

  • Strong knowledge of organic chemistry, chromatography, NMR, and IR.

  • Proven ability to elucidate unknown compound structures using multidisciplinary analytical approaches.

  • Experience in Nitrosamine testing, Extractables & Leachables studies, or trace organic analysis preferred.

  • Skilled in quantitative LC/MS method development and validation.

  • Proficiency in interpreting MS/MS spectra and accurate mass data.

Professional Skills

  • Ability to lead technical projects and communicate vision to junior associates.

  • Excellent communication skills with internal and external partners.

  • Strong decision-making, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Experience in regulated pharmaceutical environments (cGXP preferred).

  • Fast learner capable of independent work and strategic execution.
