Position: Ophthalmic Coding Specialist

Location: East Alabama Medical Center

Position Summary: We are seeking a detail-oriented Ophthalmic Coding Specialist to accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes for ophthalmic services. This role is vital in ensuring compliance with coding regulations and guidelines. The successful candidate will work closely with healthcare teams to resolve coding discrepancies, stay updated on industry changes, and support billing teams. Responsibilities include utilizing electronic health records and coding software, participating in audits, and contributing to departmental quality improvement initiatives.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum Experience: Less than 6 months of professional coding experience
  • Required Certification: Certification from AHIMA or AAPC (Apprentices will not be considered)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology
  • Experience: 6 months or more of coding experience
  • Certifications: CCS, CPC, or COPC (Certified Ophthalmology Coder)

Skills and Requirements:

  • Medical Terminology: Knowledge of medical terminology is essential.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Computer Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and coding software.
  • Coding Knowledge: Working knowledge of Official Coding Guidelines and AHA Coding Clinic.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Time Management: Effective time management and critical thinking skills.
