Position: Pharmacy Technician
Location: University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), Baltimore, MD
Compensation: $19.85 - $28.00 per hour (eligible for shift differentials and up to $1,200 sign-on bonus)

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our team. Under general supervision, you will support pharmacy operations by filling medication orders, maintaining pharmaceutical supplies, preparing sterile intravenous medications, and ensuring compliance with all regulations and standards. This role includes opportunities to assist with training, participate in inventory management, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Medication Preparation and Distribution

  • Prepare and dispense medications for inpatient and outpatient populations under pharmacist supervision.
  • Fill and label medications into unit doses and prepare sterile IV medications using aseptic techniques.
  • Deliver and pick up medications and related items from various departments and patient care areas.

Inventory Management

  • Track and maintain appropriate inventory levels of medications and supplies.
  • Process medication recalls, verify inventory accuracy, and address discrepancies with vendors or purchasing personnel.
  • Perform monthly medication expiration audits and assist with controlled substance inventory management.

Compliance and Safety

  • Follow all departmental, safety, and infection control protocols, including handling hazardous substances appropriately.
  • Participate in inspections, maintain proper equipment function, and document actions as required.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of pharmacy areas, shelves, and equipment.

Collaboration and Training

  • Assist in training new pharmacy technicians and staff members in specific job duties and protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient care and resolve operational issues.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Generate routine and requested reports from pharmacy databases (e.g., DEA usage, inventory, billing, and inspections).
  • Document controlled substances transactions and other key activities to ensure compliance with legal and organizational standards.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Completion of an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Maryland Board of Pharmacy registration required.
    • National Pharmacy Technician Certification preferred.
    • Departmental IV training and certification required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of three years of relevant pharmacy technician experience.
  • Skills:
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficient in mathematical operations for inventory and recordkeeping.
    • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and stand or walk for extended periods.
