Role Summary

The OT Technician is responsible for providing technical and operational support during surgical procedures by ensuring the availability, functionality, and readiness of operation theatre equipment, instruments, and surgical supplies. The role involves coordinating with surgeons, anesthetists, nursing staff, and biomedical engineering teams to facilitate safe and efficient surgical procedures.

The OT Technician plays a critical role in maintaining operation theatre standards, supporting patient safety, assisting in patient positioning and transfers, and ensuring adherence to surgical safety protocols.


Key Responsibilities

Operation Theatre Preparation & Readiness

  • Prepare operation theatres prior to scheduled surgical procedures.

  • Ensure availability of all required surgical instruments, consumables, and equipment.

  • Verify operation theatre readiness according to surgery-specific requirements.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of OT areas in accordance with hospital protocols.

Surgical Equipment Coordination

  • Coordinate with operating surgeons to understand requirements for:

    • Standard Surgical Equipment

    • Specialized Surgical Instruments

    • Advanced Surgical Devices

  • Arrange and prepare required equipment before surgery.

  • Ensure all requested instruments and equipment are available and functional.

Coordination with OT Team

  • Collaborate closely with:

    • Surgeons

    • Anesthetists

    • OT Nurses

    • Senior OT Technicians

    • Biomedical Engineering Teams

  • Ensure smooth workflow during surgical procedures.

  • Support timely fulfillment of surgical requirements.

Equipment Monitoring & Maintenance

  • Ensure proper functioning of operation theatre equipment including:

    • OT Lights

    • OT Tables/Beds

    • Electrocautery Units

    • Ligasure Systems

    • Harmonic Devices

    • Laparoscopic Monitors

    • Surgical Cameras

    • Suction Machines

    • Anesthesia Equipment (as applicable)

  • Perform routine equipment checks before procedures.

  • Report malfunctioning equipment promptly.

Biomedical Coordination

  • Liaise with Biomedical Engineers regarding:

    • Preventive Maintenance

    • Equipment Repairs

    • Calibration Activities

    • Equipment Troubleshooting

  • Ensure uninterrupted functioning of all OT equipment.

Patient Support & Positioning

  • Assist in transferring patients to and from the operation theatre.

  • Support proper patient positioning according to surgical requirements.

  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during positioning and transfer.

  • Assist clinical staff in maintaining patient safety throughout surgical procedures.

Surgical Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and hospital safety protocols.

  • Verify completion of pre-operative safety checks.

  • Support implementation of infection prevention and patient safety measures.

  • Ensure compliance with operation theatre quality standards.

Infection Control & Sterility

  • Maintain aseptic conditions within the operation theatre.

  • Follow infection control policies and procedures.

  • Ensure proper handling and storage of sterile instruments and equipment.

  • Support sterilization and disinfection processes as required.

Inventory & Supply Management

  • Monitor availability of:

    • Surgical Consumables

    • Disposable Items

    • OT Supplies

    • Surgical Instruments

  • Report shortages and replenishment requirements.

  • Assist in maintaining OT inventory records.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain records related to:

    • Equipment Checks

    • Maintenance Requests

    • OT Logs

    • Safety Checklists

  • Report equipment issues and operational concerns to supervisors.

  • Ensure documentation remains accurate and audit-ready.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Higher Secondary (12th Pass) or Graduate Degree

AND

  • Diploma / Certificate in:

    • Operation Theatre Technology (OTT)

    • OT Assistance

    • Surgical Technology

    • Related Allied Health Program


Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of post-diploma experience as:

    • OT Technician

    • Operation Theatre Assistant

    • Surgical Technician

  • Experience in a hospital or multi-specialty healthcare setting preferred.
