About ISMP

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing medication errors. For over 25 years, ISMP has been a leader in improving patient safety and supporting healthcare professionals through its advocacy, education, and safety initiatives. ISMP’s efforts have led to significant changes in clinical practices, public policy, and drug labeling.

In 2020, ISMP affiliated with ECRI, forming the ECRI and ISMP Patient Safety Organization (PSO). This affiliation combines the expertise of both organizations to enhance healthcare safety and support providers, patient advocates, and governments.

ISMP operates independently of advertising revenue and relies on charitable donations, educational grants, and volunteer contributions.

Position Summary

The Medication Safety Specialist serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in medication use processes and safe medication practices. This role involves contributing to membership and consulting activities, educational programs, data analysis, and advocacy efforts. The Specialist will author and edit content for ISMP publications, research proposals, safety projects, and tools, and will analyze error reports from ISMP and ECRI's reporting programs. This per diem position does not guarantee a set number of hours and will vary based on business needs.

Essential Functions

Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Safe Medication Practices:

Provide expertise on medication use processes and safety practices.
Engage in membership and consulting activities, educational programs, and special projects.
Author and edit content for ISMP publications, including guidelines, self-assessments, and best practice statements.
Offer guidance to healthcare practitioners, consumers, ISMP Fellows, and students.

Error Reporting Programs and ECRI & ISMP PSO:

Review and analyze confidential reports of hazardous conditions and medication errors from various ISMP programs and the ECRI & ISMP PSO.
Identify the causes of medication errors and collaborate on ISMP’s responses and recommendations.
Develop and implement action agendas to prevent or mitigate medication errors.

Collaboratives, Summits, Consultations, and Other Projects:

Participate in collaboratives, summits, and consultations.
Conduct risk assessments and contribute to the development and review of safety tools and resources.
Coordinate and edit content for new or revised safety guidelines and best practice statements.

Education:

Create and deliver presentations on medication safety topics for various pharmacy practices.
Mentor new employees, ISMP Fellows, students, residents, and international guests.

Additional Responsibilities:

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience.
Expertise in medication safety, error-prevention principles, and risk management methodologies (e.g., root cause analysis, failure modes and effects analysis).
At least 3 years of experience in implementing safety practices, managing projects, and utilizing healthcare risk management tools.
Experience in writing newsletters, proposals, and peer-reviewed articles.
Preferred experience in government or foundation-funded research projects and report writing.

Education:

MS degree in health sciences, MSN, DNP, PharmD, or equivalent.

Computer Skills:

Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 Suite.

Certifications & Licenses:

Current professional licensure.
Specialty certification in patient safety, medication safety, or quality/risk preferred.

Physical Demands

This role is remote and requires the individual to remain in a stationary position for most of the workday. The position involves operating standard office equipment and communicating information effectively in written and oral forms.
