Medical Project Director – Dermatology & Rheumatology CRO, Canada

About the Role

Indero, a leading contract research organization (CRO) specializing in dermatology and rheumatology, is seeking a Medical Project Director to oversee and coordinate medical operations across clinical trials in Canada. The role ensures alignment between medical affairs and operational functions, delivering high-quality medical oversight, including subject eligibility assessments, safety and efficacy review cycles, training, and inspection readiness.

The Medical Project Director serves as the strategic backbone for Medical Monitors and Independent Medical Reviewers (IMRs), translating clinical trial data into actionable insights that improve site selection, safeguard signal integrity, and optimize trial outcomes.

This role is ideal for professionals who excel at driving operational excellence in clinical research and thrive in a fast-paced, matrixed CRO environment.


Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Medical Operations

  • Lead planning, tracking, and execution of medical deliverables across multiple clinical trials.

  • Develop and maintain medical operations project plans, timelines, and risk mitigation strategies.

  • Coordinate medical input for study documents including protocols, amendments, medical monitoring plans, safety management plans, and training materials.

  • Align medical affairs activities with cross-functional timelines and project objectives.

Medical Review & Oversight

  • Oversee scheduling and execution of medical monitoring and independent review cycles.

  • Track and resolve medical escalations in collaboration with Medical Monitors and IMRs.

  • Support development and maintenance of medical data review tools, trackers, and dashboards.

Compliance, Quality, and Inspection Readiness

  • Ensure all medical operations comply with ICH-GCP, FDA, EMA, GVP, and internal SOPs.

  • Coordinate audits, inspections, and corrective actions (CAPAs).

  • Maintain inspection-ready documentation and drive continuous process improvement.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication

  • Act as the liaison between medical affairs, clinical operations, biostatistics, and sponsors.

  • Participate in internal and external meetings, presenting updates on medical operations deliverables.

  • Manage vendor alignment and ensure smooth workflows for IMRs and other medical activities.

Training & Team Enablement

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver medical training materials for internal teams, study sites, and vendors.

  • Maintain document version control and facilitate clear communication for medical clarifications and safety escalations.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Track departmental budgets and support forecasting for medical operations resourcing and workload allocation.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in a relevant discipline; advanced degrees are an asset.

Experience

  • 10+ years of clinical research experience in a CRO, pharmaceutical, or biotech company.

  • 5+ years of proven experience in project management, clinical operations, or medical operations.

  • Hands-on experience in dermatology and/or rheumatology trials preferred.

  • Familiarity with medical monitoring workflows, cross-functional coordination, and vendor oversight.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of clinical development, regulatory requirements, and ICH-GCP standards.

  • Excellent project management, organizational, and strategic planning skills.

  • Ability to synthesize complex medical/scientific data into actionable operational insights.

  • Proficiency with EDC, CTMS, eTMF, and safety database platforms.

  • Effective stakeholder management, communication, and leadership in matrixed teams.

  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of solving complex operational challenges.
