Role Summary

The Medical Director of Laboratory Operations is responsible for managing the medical and scientific quality within the technical departments of the laboratory. This position provides leadership in test method development, quality assurance, compliance, and personnel management while ensuring operational efficiency, client satisfaction, and clinical integrity in laboratory services.


Key Responsibilities

Laboratory and Scientific Oversight

  • Select, validate, and optimize clinical assay methods

  • Review quality control procedures and regulatory compliance

  • Evaluate and authorize corrective and preventive action plans

  • Provide clinical consultations and ensure test result accuracy

  • Oversee the development, troubleshooting, and improvement of lab assays

Operational Leadership

  • Manage laboratory operations according to SOPs and client needs

  • Ensure compliance with licensing and safety procedures

  • Collaborate on project scopes, contracts, and pricing strategies

  • Contribute to business development and client relationship building

Strategic and People Management

  • Lead, hire, and mentor cross-functional laboratory teams

  • Conduct performance evaluations and support professional growth

  • Monitor budgets and project profitability

  • Represent the organization at scientific and industry events

Clinical Research Support

  • Provide medical guidance for ongoing clinical trials

  • Assess safety events and oversee subject well-being


Required Qualifications

  • M.D., D.O., D.D.S., or earned doctoral degree (Ph.D., Sc.D., etc.) in chemical, biological, or physical science

  • 10+ years of leadership in clinical or analytical laboratories

  • Proven experience in assay development, lab operations, and quality systems

  • Equivalent education, training, and experience may be considered


Work Environment & Travel

  • Work occurs in office and laboratory settings

  • Occasional exposure to infectious agents or extreme temperatures

  • Frequent travel within the U.S.; some international travel may be required

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) use required
