Job Overview

ICON plc, a global leader in healthcare intelligence and clinical research, is seeking an experienced Medical Coding Specialist II to join its Clinical Data and Coding team in India. This role is critical to ensuring accurate, consistent, and regulatory-compliant medical coding across global clinical trials.

The Medical Coding Specialist II will perform advanced medical coding activities, support complex clinical studies, and provide subject-matter expertise on coding standards such as MedDRA and WHO Drug, working closely with cross-functional clinical and data management teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced coding of medical terms, including diagnoses, procedures, adverse events, and medications using MedDRA and WHO Drug dictionaries

  • Ensure coding accuracy, consistency, and traceability across multiple clinical studies and therapeutic areas

  • Review and resolve complex coding discrepancies and queries in collaboration with clinical, safety, and data management teams

  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of medical coding conventions, guidelines, and SOPs

  • Monitor updates to medical coding standards and dictionaries and ensure timely implementation within clinical trial processes

  • Support inspection readiness by maintaining high-quality, audit-compliant coding documentation


Required Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Healthcare, Pharmacy, or a related discipline

Experience:

  • 3–6 years of hands-on experience in medical coding within a clinical research, CRO, or pharmaceutical environment

  • Demonstrated expertise in MedDRA and WHO Drug coding is mandatory

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of clinical trial processes, pharmacovigilance, and regulatory requirements related to medical coding

  • Exceptional attention to detail and data accuracy with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across global teams

  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a regulated environment
