Job Title: Full-Time Pharmacist Specialist - Emergency Department & Pharmacy Operations


Position Summary

UPMC Mercy is seeking a Full-Time Pharmacist Specialist to join their Emergency Department and Pharmacy Operations team. This role involves working 7-night shifts followed by 7 nights off. Preferred candidates will have completed PGY-1, PGY-2, or possess equivalent hospital experience.

In the Emergency Department, the Pharmacist will be responsible for verifying medication orders, preparing medications for intubation and procedural sedation, assisting with traumas, burns, cardiac arrests, and internal alerts. The Pharmacist will also be a part of the pharmacokinetic team, adjusting doses for vancomycin and aminoglycosides for new consults overnight. This position is vital to ensuring the safety, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency of pharmacotherapy in the Emergency Department.


Purpose

Pharmacist Specialists at UPMC Mercy are accountable for providing safe, effective, and cost-efficient pharmacotherapy. They contribute to centralized and decentralized medication-use systems to ensure optimal medication therapy delivery. Specialist services include pharmacy informatics, research, medication safety, regulatory, and quality initiatives. Pharmacists assist in the assessment, detection, mitigation, and prevention of medication-related adverse events and regulatory non-compliance. They also participate in medication-related education and preceptorship for pharmacy students and residents.


Responsibilities

  • Interpret and evaluate physician orders to prepare, calculate, and dispense appropriate medications for inpatient and outpatient treatment.
  • Adhere to the Pennsylvania Pharmacy Practice Act, Federal Drug Laws, and other regulatory organizations.
  • Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions accurately and promptly.
  • Manage the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements and promoting rational drug therapy selection.
  • Review patient medication records for allergies, drug interactions, and therapeutic duplications.
  • Supervise pharmacy technicians, aides, and student interns involved in pharmaceutical care.
  • Communicate with physicians and nurses to clarify unclear or incomplete orders.
  • Provide drug information and educational programs to healthcare professionals and pharmacy students.
  • Utilize available technologies to enhance pharmaceutical care.
  • Prepare and dispense intravenous admixture solutions using aseptic techniques.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy.
  • B.S. or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree required.
  • Current licensure as a Pharmacist in the practicing state.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in specialized pharmacy operations or services.
  • Relevant training or certification in specialized areas preferred, including informatics, IT, inventory, research, medication safety, regulatory, and quality management.
