Food Safety Engineer

Location: India - Jhagadia
Category: Quality

Primary Function/Objectives:

  • Ensure the Food Safety Plan is implemented per Abbott’s internal policies and external regulations (e.g., FSSC22000, regulatory bodies).
  • Evaluate changes in products, processes, equipment, and facilities through Food Safety Risk Assessments and execute mitigation plans.
  • Oversee GMP, Cleaning & Sanitation, Validation, and CAPA activities linked to Food Safety.
  • Support and implement Global Food Safety Initiatives at the shop floor level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review & Improve Site Food Safety Plan, ensuring HACCP principles are integrated into daily operations.
  • Promote Food Safety Culture & Vital Behaviors within the organization.
  • Use data analysis tools to track and identify trends for continuous Food Safety improvements.
  • Lead/Support Food Safety Risk Assessments for changes in raw materials, products, processes, equipment, facilities, and capital projects.
  • Conduct Food Safety Event Investigations and implement CAPAs, ensuring reliable manual operations when necessary.
  • Participate in Validation Review Board & CAPA Review Board Meetings for proactive and reactive risk management.
  • Provide oversight for site-wide Cleaning, Sanitation & Hygiene Management Programs.
  • Collaborate with Production, QA, and Engineering to ensure effective GMP, EMP, and Sanitation Management.
  • Provide periodic refresher training and cascade learnings from global food safety events.
  • Liaise with Global Subject Matter Experts for improvement initiatives.
  • Support internal & external food safety audits as per assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain systematic documentation for Quality System compliance.
  • Provide Food Safety insights to leadership through management reviews and other defined mechanisms.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Food Engineering, Microbiology, or Pharma.
  • Experience: 7-10 years in Dairy, Food, or Nutritional Powder Manufacturing, with a preference for Infant Powder production.

Key Competencies:

  • Expertise in HACCP Principles, with an in-depth understanding of physical, chemical, and microbiological hazards, including foodborne pathogens.
  • Knowledge of Cleaning & Sanitation principles and the mode of action of chemicals.
  • Experience in Integrated Pest Control & Management.
  • Strategic thinking to analyze complex site operations and provide feasible solutions.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and influencing skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships across departments.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with project management capabilities.

Accountability & Scope:

  • Maintain a live and evolving Food Safety Management System with continuous improvement.
  • Proactively identify Food Safety risks, implement preventive measures, and incorporate learnings to avoid repeat incidents.
