Overview
Optum, a global leader in healthcare services and technology, is seeking an experienced Director of Medical Coding to lead operational performance, drive strategic initiatives, and ensure excellence in Provider Coding within the RCM (Revenue Cycle Management) function. This role demands deep expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage large teams while ensuring compliance, quality, and client satisfaction.
Role Summary
The Director of Medical Coding will oversee end-to-end coding operations, manage key performance indicators, strengthen client relationships, and promote a high-performance work culture. This position is ideal for a senior leader with extensive RCM experience and advanced certification in medical coding.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
Maintain updated knowledge of coding standards, regulatory guidelines, and industry best practices.
Lead operational KPIs including productivity, accuracy, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition.
Utilize data analytics for decision-making and rapid problem-solving.
Ensure adherence to quality, compliance, and process improvement frameworks.
People & Performance Management
Oversee workforce planning, performance management, and operational discipline across multiple teams.
Provide coaching, feedback, and skill development for supervisors and coding teams.
Drive engagement, motivation, and retention initiatives.
Build high-performing teams and support expansion of talent pipelines.
Client & Stakeholder Management
Lead client communications and maintain strong, trust-based relationships.
Present operational insights, periodic reports, and strategic recommendations.
Collaborate with senior leadership on business planning and operational enhancements.
Strategic & Financial Management
Develop annual business plans, operating budgets, and cost-optimization strategies.
Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance quality and efficiency.
Manage critical situations and provide solutions through effective negotiation.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with global onshore teams to optimize performance and drive continuous improvement.
Support enterprise initiatives aligned with organizational priorities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (Life Sciences preferred).
Minimum 18 years of experience in RCM leadership roles.
Professional coding certification (AAPC/AHIMA): CPC, COC, CIC, CCS.
Strong understanding of US Healthcare RCM and reimbursement methodologies.
Demonstrated experience managing large-scale teams (250+ coders).
Expertise in budgeting, cost estimation, and capacity planning.
Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Proven track record of improving employee engagement and client satisfaction.
Ability to lead and influence in a fast-paced environment.
