Job Overview

The Director, Country Clinical Operations Management serves as the senior Clinical Operations leader for the assigned country, responsible for strategic and operational oversight of clinical trial execution across all therapeutic areas. The role drives country-level clinical research strategy, operational excellence, resource management, regulatory compliance, quality oversight, and stakeholder engagement to support AbbVie’s global clinical development pipeline.

This leadership position is accountable for country clinical trial performance, site network expansion, inspection readiness, budget management, and development of a high-performing clinical operations organization.


Key Responsibilities

Country Clinical Operations Leadership

  • Define and execute the country clinical operations strategy aligned with AbbVie’s global and affiliate objectives.

  • Develop operational plans to support short-term and long-term clinical development goals.

  • Lead country-level clinical operations activities across all therapeutic areas.

  • Ensure successful delivery of clinical trials within timelines, budget, and quality standards.

Clinical Trial Management

  • Oversee all phases of clinical studies including:

    • Feasibility Assessments

    • Site Selection

    • Study Start-Up

    • Study Conduct

    • Site Management

    • Study Close-Out

  • Ensure high-quality execution and scientific integrity of trial activities.

  • Drive achievement of country-level study milestones and performance targets.

Site Network Development

  • Continuously assess and expand the country site footprint.

  • Identify new investigator sites and research opportunities.

  • Develop site engagement strategies to support future pipeline requirements.

  • Optimize site performance and patient recruitment capabilities.

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Clinical Operations personnel.

  • Conduct performance management, coaching, and career development activities.

  • Drive employee engagement, retention, and succession planning.

  • Build a high-performing, quality-focused clinical operations organization.

Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborate with:

    • Clinical Development Teams

    • Medical Affairs

    • Regulatory Affairs

    • Quality Teams

    • Global Clinical Operations

    • Investigators and Research Sites

  • Co-lead affiliate-level "One R&D" initiatives.

  • Promote strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

Performance & Quality Oversight

  • Monitor:

    • KPIs

    • KRIs

    • Site Performance Metrics

    • Country-Level Clinical Trial Metrics

  • Conduct trend analysis and gap assessments.

  • Implement corrective and preventive actions where required.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Compliance & Inspection Readiness

  • Ensure compliance with:

    • ICH-GCP Guidelines

    • Local Regulatory Requirements

    • Global Clinical Regulations

    • AbbVie Quality Management Systems

  • Maintain inspection readiness across all clinical activities.

  • Lead preparation and support for:

    • Regulatory Inspections

    • Internal Audits

    • Sponsor Audits

  • Act as country expert during inspections and audits.

Resource & Capacity Management

  • Assess staffing requirements and hiring needs.

  • Manage resource allocation across clinical programs.

  • Ensure adequate team capacity to support business priorities.

  • Implement flexible resource planning strategies.

Budget & Financial Management

  • Lead functional budget planning and forecasting.

  • Monitor country clinical operations budgets.

  • Collaborate with finance teams on budget management.

  • Ensure cost-effective utilization of resources.

Risk Management & Operational Excellence

  • Identify operational risks and implement mitigation plans.

  • Drive critical thinking and proactive problem-solving within teams.

  • Implement efficiency improvements and operational best practices.

  • Support organizational transformation and change management initiatives.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in:

    • Life Sciences

    • Pharmacy

    • Nursing

    • Medical Sciences

    • Biotechnology

    • Related Healthcare Discipline

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree

  • PharmD

  • MD

  • MBA (Healthcare/Management)


Experience (Minimum Required)

  • Minimum 5+ years of Clinical Research experience.

  • Strong expertise in:

    • Clinical Monitoring

    • Clinical Trial Management

    • Site Management

    • Study Start-Up to Close-Out Activities

  • Comprehensive understanding of:

    • Drug Development Process

    • Clinical Trial Regulations

    • ICH-GCP Guidelines

    • Local Regulatory Environment

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years of People Management Experience.
