Assistant Manager – Medical Coding (Chennai) – Optum

Job Summary

Optum (UnitedHealth Group) is seeking an Assistant Manager – Medical Coding to lead a team of 25–30 certified coders in Chennai. You will drive productivity, quality, TAT, people management, coaching, and process excellence across inpatient/outpatient coding operations. This role is ideal for AAPC/AHIMA-certified professionals with 2+ years of leadership (TL/AM) experience in medical coding.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and performance-manage a team of 25–30 certified medical coders.

  • Own Timeliness, Quality, and Productivity KPIs; implement corrective and preventive actions.

  • Plan, monitor, and appraise job results; coach, counsel, discipline, and develop staff.

  • Enforce quality and customer service standards; analyze trends and recommend system/process improvements.

  • Drive employee engagement and retention via regular feedback and empowerment.

  • Maintain and communicate up-to-date coding standards, policies, procedures, and productivity benchmarks.

  • Ensure full compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.

  • Participate in education workshops, professional societies, and maintain continuous professional development.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate in any discipline.

  • Certified coder (AAPC/AHIMA) – e.g., CPC, CCS, CIC, COC (any one).

  • 2+ years of experience as Team Leader/Assistant Manager in medical coding.

  • Proven experience managing minimum 15 coders.

  • Strong expertise in:

    • ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS (as relevant to your coding vertical).

    • Productivity, quality, and TAT governance.

    • Performance management, coaching, supervision, and quality management.

  • Excellent command of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
