Job Title: Assistant Manager – Medical Coding
Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Job Summary:
Optum is seeking a highly skilled Assistant Manager – Medical Coding with deep experience in team leadership, coding compliance, and client relationship management. In this role, you will manage coding teams, ensure adherence to KPIs, foster a high-performance environment, and directly contribute to health outcomes through operational excellence. The ideal candidate brings a background in life sciences, proven leadership ability, and hands-on knowledge of coding practices and regulatory standards.
Primary Responsibilities:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical coding, billing requirements, and regulatory updates.
Lead performance monitoring including productivity, quality, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition.
Manage overall personnel and disciplinary matters for assigned projects.
Own end-to-end client communication and relationship handling.
Review periodic performance reports, analyze operational metrics, and implement improvements.
Champion quality initiatives and compliance requirements including audit support.
Establish a team culture focused on morale, creativity, and collaboration.
Support planning and execution of strategic business plans, including operating budgets.
Proactively manage team engagement, retention, coaching, and performance feedback.
Identify operational weaknesses and implement training/educational solutions.
Collaborate with senior management in evaluating and modifying systems, operations, and procedures.
Required Qualifications:
Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine (BHMS, BAMS, BPT, BDS, Pharmacy, Nursing, etc.).
Certified coder from AAPC or AHIMA (CCS, CPC, CPC-H, CCS-P).
Minimum 8 years of medical coding experience with 2+ years in a Team Lead role.
Strong understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy/physiology, and pathophysiology.
Expertise in healthcare reimbursement methodologies.
Proven ability to lead audits, coach teams, and manage daily operations effectively.
Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated focus on employee engagement and client satisfaction.
