Job Title: Assistant Manager – Medical Coding
Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India

Job Summary:
Optum is seeking a highly skilled Assistant Manager – Medical Coding with deep experience in team leadership, coding compliance, and client relationship management. In this role, you will manage coding teams, ensure adherence to KPIs, foster a high-performance environment, and directly contribute to health outcomes through operational excellence. The ideal candidate brings a background in life sciences, proven leadership ability, and hands-on knowledge of coding practices and regulatory standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical coding, billing requirements, and regulatory updates.

  • Lead performance monitoring including productivity, quality, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition.

  • Manage overall personnel and disciplinary matters for assigned projects.

  • Own end-to-end client communication and relationship handling.

  • Review periodic performance reports, analyze operational metrics, and implement improvements.

  • Champion quality initiatives and compliance requirements including audit support.

  • Establish a team culture focused on morale, creativity, and collaboration.

  • Support planning and execution of strategic business plans, including operating budgets.

  • Proactively manage team engagement, retention, coaching, and performance feedback.

  • Identify operational weaknesses and implement training/educational solutions.

  • Collaborate with senior management in evaluating and modifying systems, operations, and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine (BHMS, BAMS, BPT, BDS, Pharmacy, Nursing, etc.).

  • Certified coder from AAPC or AHIMA (CCS, CPC, CPC-H, CCS-P).

  • Minimum 8 years of medical coding experience with 2+ years in a Team Lead role.

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy/physiology, and pathophysiology.

  • Expertise in healthcare reimbursement methodologies.

  • Proven ability to lead audits, coach teams, and manage daily operations effectively.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated focus on employee engagement and client satisfaction.
