Job Summary:

Abbott Nutrition is seeking an Assistant Chemist I (2nd Shift) for its Sturgis, MI facility. This on-site role is vital for ensuring laboratory operations meet regulatory standards and customer expectations. The selected candidate will assist in analytical laboratory tasks supporting nutrition product quality and compliance, contributing to Abbott's industry-leading nutrition brands.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the performance of a multi-shift laboratory operation.

  • Ensure product quality compliance with Abbott policies, local, statutory, and international regulatory requirements.

  • Make operational decisions impacting product quality and compliance.

  • Support financial oversight including OT, expenses, labor, and material usage within the lab budget.

  • Drive performance improvements using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

  • Train, coach, and develop laboratory staff to enhance team capabilities.

  • Supervise laboratory personnel, including staffing, evaluations, and safety oversight.

  • Assist in laboratory troubleshooting and problem-solving.

  • Provide technical guidance ensuring compliance with test methods and corporate guidelines.

  • Maintain adherence to FDA 21 CFR and relevant regulatory standards.


Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Food Technology, or related field.

  • Minimum 5+ years of laboratory experience in a regulated industry (pharma, food, cosmetics, medical devices).

  • Proven leadership and project execution abilities.

  • Knowledge of process control and continuous improvement.

  • Understanding of laboratory operations in high-volume manufacturing.

  • Strong communication and team management skills.

  • Familiarity with FDA 21 CFR regulations and quality control standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or 7+ years of experience in a regulated laboratory environment.

  • Infant formula manufacturing background preferred.

  • Experience with project planning and execution tools.
