Training Specialist – Histology

Location: Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Department: Histology Laboratory Operations
Job Type: Full-Time
Shift: 3rd Shift (Night Shift)
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:30 PM – 6:00 AM
Shift Differential: Eligible


Job Summary

The Training Specialist – Histology is responsible for onboarding, training, competency development, and performance enhancement of histology laboratory staff. The role supports quality, compliance, operational excellence, and workforce development while also performing hands-on histology laboratory procedures as required.


Key Responsibilities

Training & Development

  • Assist with onboarding and initial training of new employees.

  • Deliver group and one-on-one training programs for performance improvement and professional development.

  • Conduct training on:

    • Company policies and procedures

    • Departmental SOPs

    • Compliance requirements

    • Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)

    • Technical laboratory competencies

  • Develop, implement, and maintain training resources and educational programs.

  • Evaluate and update training plans, materials, and competency programs.

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of all training activities.

Employee Performance Support

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and training resource for department employees.

  • Assist leadership in developing performance improvement plans for underperforming staff.

  • Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to laboratory personnel.

  • Support departmental quality and service objectives through effective training initiatives.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure all training activities comply with laboratory regulations and quality standards.

  • Act as a procedural and compliance resource for the Histology department.

  • Promote best practices, standardization, and continuous improvement.

  • Support laboratory leadership in achieving operational and quality metrics.

Laboratory Operations

Perform routine Histology laboratory duties as required, including:

  • Tissue processing

  • Embedding

  • Microtomy

  • Histological staining

  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining

  • Preparation of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections

  • Laboratory workflow support during high-volume periods or staffing shortages

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain training logs, competency records, and compliance documentation.

  • Assist with administrative and departmental projects.

  • Support operational reporting and documentation activities.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or higher in:

    • Chemical Science

    • Biological Science

    • Clinical Laboratory Science

    • Medical Technology

  • Must meet applicable CLIA and state regulatory requirements.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in:

    • Histology

    • Biological Science

    • Chemical Science

    • Clinical Laboratory Science

    • Medical Technology

  • Histology Certification and/or ASCP Certification.

  • 3+ months of Immunohistochemistry (IHC) experience.

  • 6+ months of prior training, mentoring, or leadership experience.
