Job Overview
The Team Lead – Microbiology is responsible for managing microbiological testing operations, supervising laboratory teams, and ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards. This leadership role involves overseeing microbiology testing processes, managing quality assurance activities, leading corrective action initiatives, and driving continuous improvement in laboratory efficiency and productivity.

This position is suited for experienced microbiology professionals with strong leadership capabilities and expertise in food testing laboratory environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee microbiological testing in accordance with established standard procedures.

  • Manage and supervise assigned laboratory operations and production workflows.

  • Lead corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes for microbiological and quality non-conformities.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor laboratory methods and documentation review processes.

  • Oversee incoming testing of raw materials and ingredients.

  • Represent microbiology and incoming quality functions during external quality and regulatory audits.

  • Conduct internal microbiology audits and maintain audit programs.

  • Monitor laboratory performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives for productivity and efficiency.

  • Manage departmental budgets and implement cost optimization strategies.

  • Maintain reference cultures and ensure high standards of laboratory quality.

  • Serve as a technical resource and liaison for plant operations and cross-functional teams.

  • Recruit, train, and mentor laboratory staff while maintaining a professional and safe work environment.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and operating procedures.

  • Maintain effective collaboration with internal teams, customers, vendors, and stakeholders.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Microbiology or related life sciences discipline.

  • 5–7 years of experience in food testing microbiology laboratories.

  • Strong knowledge of microbiological testing methods, laboratory quality systems, and regulatory standards.

  • Proven experience in team leadership and laboratory operations management.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Knowledge of quality assurance systems and regulatory compliance practices.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and coordinate laboratory activities effectively.
