Job Summary

The Senior Clinical Programmer serves as the lead programmer managing and supporting project deliverables and timelines. The role involves designing, developing, validating, and maintaining applications for Electronic Data Capture (EDC) and clinical data processing.

The individual will act as a technical subject matter expert (SME), providing support to production-line clinical programming and data management teams, overseeing integrations, system performance, and vendor collaborations.


Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, validation, and maintenance of clinical databases and EDC systems (Medidata Rave, Oracle Inform, etc.).

  • Generate and maintain required documentation, including specifications, annotated CRFs, edit checks, and reports.

  • Serve as the primary programmer on multiple concurrent studies (3–10 projects), managing deliverables, resources, and timelines.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members.

  • Conduct quality reviews of study-level and program-level deliverables.

  • Support database build, migration, and validation activities post-database changes.

  • Act as 2nd-tier help desk support for system issues and user queries.

  • Oversee system integrations, user acceptance testing (UAT), and software updates.

  • Participate in project meetings, sponsor audits, and departmental reviews.

  • Review study budgets, manage scope of work, and assist with change orders.

  • Stay updated on evolving clinical programming and data management trends.


Key Skills & Technical Expertise

  • EDC Tools: Medidata Rave, Oracle Inform, Oracle RDC, iMedidata

  • Programming: Custom Function Programming (4+ years), Edit Check Programming, Dynamic Edits, PL/SQL, SAS, C#, VB

  • Database Activities: CRF annotation, database creation, coding setup, import/export processing

  • Reporting Tools: Listings, eCRF PDF reports, custom reports

  • Project Leadership: Resource management, issue escalation, timeline monitoring

  • System Knowledge: Workflow monitoring, performance tracking, system error resolution

  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, analytical problem-solving, and client interaction


Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 5+ years total experience in clinical programming

    • Minimum 4 years in Custom Function Programming

    • Minimum 3 years in database migration and impact analysis

  • Experience in managing multiple priorities within dynamic environments

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to travel up to 25%

  • Experience in a matrix organization preferred
