About the Role
Roche is advancing science to provide meaningful improvements in healthcare globally. Following the acquisition of Stratos Genomics in 2020, Roche Diagnostics is pioneering Sequencing by Expansion (SBX™) technology, which enhances DNA sequencing accuracy and throughput. As a Senior Scientist in the Molecular Engineering group, you will design, synthesize, and optimize molecular building blocks that translate DNA sequences into measurable surrogates, the Xpandomer, supporting next-generation sequencing innovations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the research, design, and execution of innovative, well-controlled experiments with high precision.

  • Mentor, guide, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project milestones.

  • Troubleshoot complex experimental challenges using creative solutions.

  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for reagent and starting material production.

  • Participate actively in reagent synthesis, characterization, and protocol development.

  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and compliant laboratory records.

  • Analyze experimental data and present findings in group or departmental meetings.

  • Propose and implement process improvements to enhance lab operations and experimental outcomes.

  • Maintain laboratory organization, safety, and compliance standards.

Qualifications & Experience Required

  • PhD in Organic Synthesis, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field with 4+ years of relevant industrial or academic laboratory experience, or

  • Master’s degree in the same fields with 7+ years of experience, or

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant laboratory experience.

  • Strong expertise in nucleotide/heterocyclic chemistry, phosphorus chemistry, and multi-step organic synthesis.

  • Experience with chemical and biochemical sample handling, reactivity assessment, purification, and storage.

  • Hands-on experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC, MS, NMR, automated DNA synthesizers, inert atmosphere work, and manual pipetting.

  • Prior exposure to next-generation DNA sequencing technologies is highly desirable.

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated ability in the chemistry of nucleotides, phosphoramidites, heterocycles, amino acids, and bio-conjugations.

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and data interpretation skills.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced research environment and mentor junior scientists.

Additional Information

  • Relocation support is available.

  • Salary range for Seattle, WA: $104,400 – $193,800 annually, dependent on experience, qualifications, and geographic location.

  • Discretionary annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
