Role Overview: Subject Matter Expert - Spray Dried Dispersion (SDD) Technology

Pfizer is seeking a Pharmaceutical Science Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Spray Dried Dispersion (SDD) technology. In this critical role, you will collaborate with formulation scientists to influence the selection and development of small molecule drug candidates, particularly in the area of improving drug delivery and bio-performance through SDD technology. You will be responsible for developing optimal SDD compositions and ensuring their performance in vivo. This role also includes driving innovation in amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) manufacturing technologies and performing technology transfer activities with Pfizer’s GMP SDD vendor network.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Formulation and Process Development:

    • Evaluate the physicochemical properties of small molecule drug candidates to inform ASD formulation strategy and assess developability risks.
    • Design and develop diagnostic and preclinical SDD formulations aimed at enhancing bioavailability.
    • Apply fundamental principles of thermodynamics and kinetics to address issues such as dissolution, precipitation, and solid-state stability in biorelevant conditions.
  2. Subject Matter Expertise:

    • Serve as the subject matter expert in SDD formulation and process development for multiple discovery teams across different research units.
    • Collaborate with academic and industrial researchers to address gaps in amorphous solid dispersions and explore innovative solutions.
  3. Research and Development:

    • Conduct novel research in SDD technology, presenting findings via internal and external presentations or publications.
    • Supervise laboratory staff to support SDD production and assessment.
    • Contribute to the formation of predictive models and work towards enhancing the efficiency of processes and workflows in ASD technology.
  4. Collaboration and Leadership:

    • Work cross-functionally with scientists to address key challenges in the ASD space.
    • Develop strategic collaborations with external and internal stakeholders to advance the science and application of SDD technology.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD with 12+ years of experience in spray dried dispersion technology or related fields.
  • Experience in formulation and manufacturing of SDDs, particularly for bioavailability enhancement.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in collaboration within laboratory environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in isolating and analyzing complex processes for experimental design.
  • Strong skills in generating and interpreting experimental data and integrating it into mathematical models.
  • Experience in pharmacokinetic modeling and simulations using software such as Gastroplus, Simcyp, or Phoenix.
  • Leadership experience, including coaching, guiding teams, and managing projects across tight timelines.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • The role involves activities in both laboratory and office settings, requiring the ability to perform routine laboratory tests, mathematical calculations, and complex data analysis.

Non-Standard Work Schedule/Travel:

  • Occasional travel for conferences or training (domestic and international).

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base Salary: $149,200 to $248,600 annually.
  • Bonus: Eligible for Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 20% of the base salary.
  • Benefits: Includes a 401(k) plan, paid leave, medical, dental, and vision coverage, and more.

Other Information:

  • Work Location: On-premise.
  • Relocation Assistance: Available based on business needs or eligibility.
  • EEO Statement: Pfizer is an equal opportunity employer and supports diversity and inclusion.

Deadline to Apply:

  • Not specified (check on Pfizer’s career page).

This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead advancements in spray dried dispersion (SDD) technology and improve drug bioavailability, contributing to Pfizer’s pioneering role in pharmaceutical science.
