Job Summary

Optum is seeking a Senior Medical Coder – Surgery with deep expertise in professional fee surgical coding across multispecialty outpatient surgery centers and hospitals. You will analyze operative notes, assign ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II codes and appropriate modifiers, and ensure compliance with ICD‑10‑CM Official Guidelines, CPT guidelines, CMS updates, AHA Coding Clinic, NCCI edits, LCD/NCD coverage determinations, and client coding policies. This role is ideal for AAPC/AHIMA certified coders with 4+ years of hands-on surgical coding experience (Orthopedics, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, ENT/Otolaryngology, Eye, OBGYN, etc.) who consistently meet quality and productivity benchmarks (4–6 charts/hour).


Key Responsibilities

  • Verify, abstract, and accurately code professional surgical services using ICD‑10‑CM, CPT & HCPCS Level II with correct modifiers.

  • Maintain ≥95% coding quality and 4–6 charts/hour productivity standards.

  • Track, interpret, and implement the latest AMA, AHA, and CMS guideline updates.

  • Validate NCCI edits, LCD/NCD coverage and update ICD‑10‑CM/CPT/modifiers accordingly.

  • Organize and prioritize work to resolve edits within regulatory & client TAT.

  • Uphold HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, and data security standards.

  • Partner with large teams to drive quality and productivity improvements.

  • Participate in coding meetings, audits, education conferences, and continuous upskilling.

  • Adhere to company policies, including potential shift/location/team changes driven by business needs.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree – Life Sciences or Allied Medicine preferred.

  • Mandatory certification: AAPC or AHIMA (e.g., CPC, CCS, CIC, COC).

  • 4+ years of multispecialty surgical coding (Orthopedics, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, ENT, Eye, OBGYN, etc.).

  • Mastery of ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS, Modifiers, and payer-specific rules.

  • Strong knowledge of NCCI edits, LCD/NCDs, CMS policies, AHA Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant.

  • Solid grounding in medical terminology, human anatomy & physiology.

  • Proven ability to hit quality/productivity metrics and manage deadlines.

  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and documentation skills.
